Baby on Board

It was remarkable to me to understand the statistics of how many young children have died to heat stroke while left in a car. I could not imagine the feeling of a parent who did this unintentionally. It was crazy to think that there was an actual symptom for that. Forgotten Baby Symptom is something that made me laugh a little at first but really got me thinking how many mothers and fathers forget about their child in the back seat and how amazingly crazy it is. 

Their products that their group created was fascinating. I thought it would be a really good idea for the future. I think it would be hard to keep track of the bracelet and with all the charging. It is an accessory and it is easy to take on and off through out the day. I feel like there could be a way to make it so that the child could not take it off but when you have to charge it, there could be some days where you forget to take it off the charger and put it on the child. I have a fitbit and I love wearing it. But there are so many days where I forget to take it off the charger at night and put it on. I know a Fitbit for your health is a lot different than this wristband that determines your child's well being or not but it could be tough to remember. I do however bring my phone everywhere I go. The app was a great idea. The alarm that goes off is perfect for a parent to remember how far away their kids are. 

All in all, I really like the product and all of its features. I would definitely buy this in the future if I have ever have a child. I am someone who forgets so many things. I know a child is awfully hard to forget but the statistics were amazing. I never would of thought it would be so many kids left in cars.

The thing that really got to me was the video. It really brought in the people viewing your presentation and made them think that this could happen to anyone. It brought emotion and a lot of power. After that, I was locked in to what they had to say. This was a great presentation and a great product and I really liked what they had to offer. 

Catfish for Dinner

Catfish is a documentary about a videographer, Nev, who met a friend, Abby, through YouTube videos. He was friended by her on Facebook. Nev later talked to the young artists’ mother, Angela on Facebook. Through the family, Nev met Abby’s older step sister Megan on Facebook as well. The problem is Nev is a photographer and videographer who lives in New York and Abby’s family is from Michigan. Megan and Nev started to text and call each other constantly. The problem is that this is not at all what Nev thinks it is. His brother, Ariel and other partner and friend, Henry in his business found out some things that did not add up. It turned out that Abby’s mother, Angela was in fact Angela, Abby, Megan and various others on Facebook to make it seem truly authentic.

Angela was forced to confess all the people she was on Facebook when Nev and his crew took a pit stop in Michigan at their house while coming home from a job in Colorado. Her husband, Vince thought that Nev was just one of Angela’s primary buyers for her paintings. When Vince found out what she was truly doing, he explained to the crew what exactly Angela was doing and why it necessarily was not a bad thing. Vince explained about how cod would be mushy when they would be sent over from Alaska and they would not taste good. One of the fishers put catfish beside the cod to make the cod fresh all the way back from Alaska and the cod would still taste good. The analogy is that you need catfish in your life to keep you guessing and keep you fresh. I think that this analogy is perfect but it gives no right for anybody to do this.

I am disgusted on why any person would want to do this. I think the most disturbing thing that they did was bring a little girl into the situation. Angela’s life was so sad having to take care of Vince’s two boys both with mental disabilities. She wanted to be a painter and a dancer her whole life and her marriage has kept her back. These personalities on Facebook were the only things that kept making her feel like she could still have those dreams in hand. It is strange to see how far people will take these things. I know it is for their own self but it is not right to bring in innocent people into your situation.

The Bear is Loose

Values of a human life are all the same. We all deserve to live and deserve to keep our dignity. Cruel and unusual punishment is something that no human should have to go through in their life. That is a main reason why the law prohibits it against criminals and wrongdoers. For some reason, however, the legal system is allowing people to be put to the chair. If cruel and unusual punishment isn't allowed then why should death be allowed? That is the cruelest thing there is.

In the episode of Black Mirror, White Bear, there is a woman who is tortured every day for the rest of her life for a wrong action that she made in her life. Victoria, the main character is put in a neighborhood that she cannot recognize​. Without her knowledge, the neighborhood is like a zoo for the onlookers, and she is the viscous animal they all came to see. Every morning, she awakens with no memory with the help of future technology.

This is the same world we live in but just in the future. But in the future, could you see us paying money to see a woman be tortured just for the wrong doings she has done. I believe we could. And to go even farther, it might even be going on today. A woman's dignity is being humiliated just for a crime she has made while the legal system is making big money off of it.

I am a strong believer in imprisonment. Although, it is not the way anyone should live, people commit crimes and need to be put away. While in prison, they still have time to make a new case to get less years or even prove that they are not guilty. With that being said, I do not believe in the death penalty. Everyone deserves to live, although prison is terrible, at least they are alive. Because of the actions criminals make, they deserve to be put away to prison and have to be separated from society.

There is a fine line between what is deserved and what is cruel and unusual punishment. The torture that Victoria has to suffer is very cruel and very unusual. Being locked out of society is not cruel or unusual punishment, it's what they deserve. If a man had just murdered a person, I don't care how much that man has changed, I do not want that man in my neighborhood. I know a lot of people would say that about a murderer but they would come to say "What about a low major crime and if they changed then?" Any crime you could name, I would not want them near me or my family.

Man in the Black Mirror

In the episode of Black Mirror, “Be Right Back”, Ash is headed back to return a van but he never returns. It turns out that he can, but not the real Ash. The episode is based in our world but in the near future with a lot of new technologies. The “Be Right Back” episode displays a new technology that can retrieve all of someone’s social media, private emails, text messages, etc. and bring them to act like the person of your choosing. For Martha, the main character, it was her late husband and future father of her unborn child, Ash. Martha was introduced to this technology by a friend who went through the same experience as her. At first, the technology was used for texting then it later became phone calls but later, the robot version of Ash tells Martha there is something more. She only wanted to tell Ash that he would be a father but It turns out that there is a new technology that lets the robot version of Ash, that was on the phone, become a near look alike to Ash in human form by collecting his photos from social media.

After the shipment of Ash the robot comes in, Ash the robot gives Martha the instruction over the phone. She has to put his “artificial” limbs in water and it will create the human like version of Ash. She does what she was told and puts him in her bathtub. Hours later, a spot on look-alike version of Ash comes walking down the stairs only to draw a blank on Martha’s face. She was astonished to see Ash standing there. Or what she thought to be Ash. She wanted to use this for everything that she wanted to do with him again. Everything.

Martha later noticed that the newer version of Ash was not always similar to the true Ash. There are many examples of how the newer Ash would not always act the same as the true Ash. Martha is creeped out by the actions of the newer version of Ash so she kicks him out of the bedroom. New Ash just stands up and continues to leave. Martha yells at him and says that is not what Ash would do, he would resist and tell me no and that he is staying. New Ash starts to resist and say no, but Martha did not want it that way, she wanted him to do it because Ash would really do it, not because she told him to do it.

After all of these examples, she gets tired of the new Ash and keeps him in the attack for years. She only goes to see him on Sundays and special occasions so that her daughter can have time with her father. She is shown at the end to still be in shock with the new technology but she knows it would be good for her daughter to have a father figure even if her real father isn’t really there.

A Whole New Ash

     The short film Be Right Back introduced us to a semi-futuristic reality where it was possible to spend time with people who have passed through a program that compiles their online actions and opinions, effectively making portable copies of the dead on their phones. In the film, the female protagonist Martha uses this service to talk to her boyfriend, Ash, who had died in a car accident a few minutes into the story. After using this service for some time, Martha decides to take it a step further and bring Ash back not only in mind, but in flesh as well, using the highest package the program has to offer. But it is not long before she notices the flaws in this Ash who lacks the imperfections and habits of normal humans, as well as the memories and mannerisms of the real Ash. She finds the double to be too artificial, too different from humans. I however disagree. I say, the new Ash is just as human as the original, if not more so.

     It is not difficult to see the ways that the new Ash is different from the average human; he lacks the need to eat or sleep, he does not bleed when he is cut, and he can not go further than the house's mailbox without Martha coming with him. These and a number of other physical issues easily separate him from the rest of humanity. However, if these physical abnormalities were all it took to make someone inhuman, that would imply that humans are nothing more than their bodies. Look back at the film for a moment, was Martha's issue with this new Ash simply physical? That wouldn't make much sense, she seemed to be intelligent enough to gather that there would be differences in his body simply by looking at the fleshless package she first received. And when it was simply a program on her phone she was fine, it was close enough to being the real Ash. It was only when the android was dealing with parts of Ash's life that he neglected to post about that it was seen as a problem. Her desire was for the copy to be exactly like the original, much like a person getting out of a relationship projects their old partner onto their new one. But this Ash is not like this. He is a wholly new person with a different personality. He thinks and acts in the same way a normal human would when starting a new job or school; he does not understand all the nuances of his surroundings and has to play off of what others around him do. He will not act exactly like someone who has been there for years, he can only act as he knows how. In this way he is just like an ordinary human, stumbling through life unaware of what will trigger people around him, altering his actions to avoid upsetting people, and learning more about the world with each passing day. So the question is not if he is human, but rather, what does it really mean to be a human?

Language Barriers

Yes yes yes...technology that will help us understand languages in real time...finally whenever i go to get a pedicure and massage i can know if the technicians are speaking on the conditions of my feet and body lol. No in all seriousness i feel as is Audite is a good idea. It helps to place those awkward gaps in between conversation. Too many times i have struggled to understand something that could gave been very simple. Sometimes it is embarrassing. Especially if you work in a store and a person from another country has a question. Im not going to lie though...i think the design is a bit ugly. Lol the end piece looks super long so i would not want to rock it openly in public. Also i would not want to become too dependant on it.

I like the fact that this device can be used inside if the school system. I remember being in school and people who were in esl could only have a few regular classes. The rest of the time they spent in classrooms together learning English mostly. If they had this piece they would be able to function normally in the school system. 

But would this prohibit their learning? No. I believe eventually as is speaks the languages to the students they would catch on and learning the basics themselves. In a way it is kind of sad the way we try to make them fully adapt to our language.

Sometimes people do not want to learn a language they just want to understand the language. They are frustrated with the time gap of learning and this is a major aid. I like the app the have to go with the device. A feature on the app that is of the most importance is the little switch between button that allows for a conversation style translation. I also like the website layout. It was well put together and neat. One future addition that i agree on are the water proof capabilities. I would hate to be in the rain have a full blast conversation just for the device to begin malfunctioning midway. Talk about embarrassing. 

I do not like the price at all. I Do not like bluetooth that much. For 200 bucks i will surely be sticking to my google translator and going down the bumpy road. 

Congrats to the team that came up with this brilliant idea though.

I believe that your presentation was wonderful and I truly admire that you all care about our safety that much to create an app to tackle that. I truly support your app to the fullest and would like to use it in my everyday life in the future when it is more up to standards. My concern right now about it is that it is only available for Android users only and I have an iPhone, but I do think that you all will implement that idea in the future, I hope. Overall, great project and congratulations on the win! Please continue to work on that app. I surely believe it will impact may lives here at CBU.

I believe that your presentation was great and I like how you all used psychology to express the objective of your product. In my opinion, I believe we can naturally determine if someone is stressed out or not, so there is really no need for such technology. If so, it is already out there, potentially speaking. Also, the cost in my opinion is a little bit too much. That would be me paying for a set of BEATS headphones when I can buy some with the same quality for much cheaper when the purpose of buying them is just to listen to music. Overall, I do like the structure of the presentation and also like how the design of the headphones look. Fascinating! Maybe this product could lead to a huge impact in the future.

Shelter Connection

Shelter Connection is a website that helps supply the homeless with any other requirements necessary to last the day by bringing together other charity organizations into one website. This website has many great features such as a list of all the charities connected through the site, a spread out calendar of different planned events, a charity of the week system, and the use of crowd rise as a fundraising tool. In using a list of charities, it helps volunteers find all of the charities in one place, providing all the needed information in a fast, convenient manner. Providing info on the cost for needed items is a smart way to push people to donate money because it shows how their donation is helping the homeless community and specifically what it's going towards. I think the calendar feature is an excellent idea because it polls all the planned events onto one page for easy access and organization. In having a calendar, people will not get flustered in finding the time and location of an event, making volunteer work far easier to plan out. The charity of the week system causes people to continually visit the website with a new, special event given to them, which leads to more website visits and more people joining certain events. It also spreads the news of new and old organizations right when someone logs onto the page. Furthermore, it can help new organizations with the suggestions options, which allows people to favorite their charity of choice, which gives more attention to that one charity. A great point was made during the presentation about having all of the correct information for the charities because a vast majority of them have not updated their websites. This is because most of these organizations do not have the time, money, or people to keep up with all of the changes on the websites. Crowd rise is another amazing part of Shelter Connection because it is a successful fundraising website . This project is a fantastic idea with great qualities and features, that if put to further use, would be deemed successful.

Alone Together

A girl sits alone in a bar. She is an easy target for all predators, and it would be easy to bring some kind of harm to her. This chance at harm to her would be significantly reduced if she had someone with her, but she is alone, letting people take advantage of the situation. The next day, she regrets ever going out at all, and she vows not to go out ever again due to the terrible experience. This shouldn’t happen. People should be able to go out into the world and have a good time without the constant threat that someone might act against them.

Part of the problem with going out alone is that you don’t feel like anyone will help. Even in large crowds, it is easy for everyone to look away and think that someone else will help those who are in need. What people truly need in these situations is a friend, or, at the very least, someone who will look out for them. If they had that, then they might be safe. If more people had such people to look out for them, they’d feel more free to go out and have fun. That is where SafeTeam comes into play.

SafeTeam is both an app and a website that helps people to not be so alone when they are practically anywhere. People who use the app can alert others in the area when they feel that they are in some kind of danger or if they are simply uncomfortable with the people around them. Others who have that app will be told when someone in their area needs them and how dangerous the situation is. Different colored leaves represent different levels of threats and urgency, so those who have a chance to help can use that to determine if they would really be of any use.

I personally like this idea. It is smart to enlist the help of people who you might be able to help as well. There are only some parts of SafeTeam that concern me. I feel like people could easily take advantage of this system, just like how many apps like this and Pokemon Go have been used to target others, and people with ill intentions might target those who are in a vulnerable condition. They said that they will have a test so that these kinds of people can be weeded out, but I still have my doubts that people who take the test won't just answer in the way they know they are supposed to answer. Also, if they use social security numbers to perform background checks, I think a lot of people might not use the app as they might think it could be a means of a scam. I also believe that some people might still ignore the pleas of others even though they have the app, and then the app might become useless. I think these problems need to be properly addressed before I would ever be willing to get such an app.

Watch For Those Tricky Kids

It can be difficult to pull oneself away from television screens, computers, and phones. There are simply too many distractions, and it can have some serious consequences. I, for one, use these devices to procrastinate on the work I need to complete for class. I could easily get the work done if I would just get off of the internet. My levels of procrastination for class aren't the only things affected by these black mirrors. While I waste my time on sites like Tumblr and Youtube, I could be exercising and losing weight. I am actually obese and my actions of playing on the computer all night have only worked to worsen my weight. The only exercise I seem to get is when I’m walking from class to class, and that’s barely anything at all.

However, I am not the only one ensnared by these technologies. People of all ages find it hard to avert their attention away from electronics like them. The number of people who are obese had been rapidly increasing over the years, and this trend could be partly caused by televisions, phones, and computers. Since people are so engrossed in their phones, they don’t take the time to get out and exercise, and they might even be more likely to reach for meals that are unhealthy but faster to make than healthy meals.

WatchIt! is both a wristband and an app that hopes to combat obesity in adolescents and children. The app blocks the use of six of the most used apps until the user has exercised a certain amount, or walked a certain distance. It calculates this distance with the watch, which sends the information to the phone. The watch is colorful to attract the attention of small children, but it is my belief that this could be used for almost any age. If adults used it for their own purposes rather than the child’s, they could be able to change the setting, so they wouldn’t have to do the work. However, it would give them more incentive to stay off their phones and get the exercise they need. I also believe that this watch and app could somehow be transferred to computers and televisions. 

My only real concern for the device is that it only blocks up to six apps. I don’t know if the app could differentiate between games that children play on their phones and apps that might actually be necessary to them. I also know that children can be terribly clever, with emphases on terrible. I could easily imagine a situation where a kid might have multiple apps that he might play on until the app considers it to be the one they are on the most, and then that kid will just go to play on a different app until the same thing happens. It could be an endless loop if they have enough apps. I think that problem needs to be addressed more.

The Wiretap

On the group presentation “Wiretap”, I thought this was a wonderful idea. What a great way to cater to group of people that is sometimes overlooked. The youth of today are bombarded with social media and other types of social interaction that can cause stress and depression. By creating a device that can offer help and possible encourage youth is a great idea; also to do so in a way that does not cause more social awkwardness is brilliant. It is type of thinking that is going to propel us further as humans, by trying to help those who are overlooked or problems that are sometimes seen as not important is a wonderful way to get involved in society. I think the group did a great job of presenting the facts and answering question. I feel as if it would have been cool if they would have brought in a pair of headphones even if they were not prototypes the visual could have helped in their overall project. But as for the technology itself it was very nicely presented and interesting. They were able to share fact that I had never even thought of, their idea was imaginative and creative, and something that could be used in today’s society. I think in the future finding other devices that work along the same ways would be great also having a way of recording the waves could provide doctors with some good data when it comes to treatments. I felt as if it met all the boxes for a great presentation and is something that thought outside of the box. It was a product that I don’t think is out there or at least it was not something I had ever heard of or seen. That to was interesting in the fact that they brought up that there are similar devices out there but that their design was different and more user friendly. I think they did an awesome job and shared some interesting facts and ideas that I appreciate them for sharing. I would like to wish them luck on Saturday and I hope they are able to convey a clear concise presentation like the one they gave in class and people can walk away a little wiser from listening. In the future I hope that something like this is invented and we can stop losing people to suicide and depression .

Babyl/On Point

I think that part of what made this project so interesting, as a viewer, was the problem this group chose to solve. I think that a lot of the other projects aimed to fix fairly broad issues, which is a good thing, but I think that this group chose a very specific problem. Furthermore, I think that the problem they chose was very specific to CBU. As I'm sure everyone has noticed, our school has a very large ESL population. There are at least 1-5 ESL students in every class I am taking this semester. I know that a lot of students who speak English as a first language try to help ESL students through tutoring and study groups, but there is still a language barrier that can make it difficult to help. I think the idea of bettering education for ESL students without the need of other people is wonderful. Not only is it helpful because of the language barrier, but it could also potentially relieve the anxiety of having to ask for help. Having to  ask other people, even peers, for help can be extremely nerve-wracking for some students. Being able to study and learn on your own can make life easier and make you feel more empowered and in control of your life.
Additionally, I think that the presentation for this project was one of the best I saw. When they demonstrated the technological aspects of the app/device, like how it would work from the inside and how it would be safe, I was simply in awe. As someone who doesn't really understand how technology works, I found this really impressive and helpful to the audience. I also appreciated it because no other group really went into that kind of detail about how the app would work from the inside. Overall, it was just a very impressive presentation. I would argue that this group could sell RNA to a ribosome.
Another reason I liked this project was because I think it correlated with my group project, as they both tackled education problems. If both of our projects were ever created in real life, I think that the two companies would partner well together. We mentioned that with our tablet, if users pressed the text they were reading, they could see a translation on the screen in another language. However, if PrepMe and Babyl/OFF worked together, maybe the translation part of the app could come from the Babyl/OFF earpiece instead. Clearly, both groups care about the education gap- maybe just in different ways.
