I really do like the idea of Finance University. I do agree that a lot of college students do not know how to budget their money properly. While a lot of parents will give their children a decent allowance while they are in college in order to help with their bills, I never got that privilege. From a young age, my parents taught me how to budget my money wisely. I guess they knew that when I got to this point in life, they would not be able to make as great of an influence. I was privileged in this sense; many children do not get that same knowledge and experience I had pounded in my head. I know how to budget, but I often fail to do so. I work part time, so money is not a problem for me. The biggest problem for me now is that I do not have the time, and it is too easy to be irresponsible. This would be okay, but the government keeps trying to let me borrow large amounts of money. Having an institution to help empower students to budget better and to make wiser spending decisions would be a great means to prevent poor decision making in this transitional period. The only problems I foresee is that many students will take out student loans in order to pay their tuition and other school costs. I think I would find it hard for someone to take out a loan while continuing to spend money on leisure such as eating out and entertainment. There was never really a true solution to this dilemma. If you have a job, it would be easy to put money away each check for your loan and still have a little left over to play with; however, if you have no source of income, then it is hard to justify blowing your money. Another problem I saw with the presentation is that society views these student loans as the norm. I know a lot of people would not be able to attend school at all without the help of loans, but I feel as though it is always better to not have a credit because you never took out a loan than to have good credit and owe $30,000. I also feel as though people would appreciate their money more if they had to earn it rather than taking it for granted because it was handed to them. I know that it was said that the counselors at FinU would tell the student their honest advice, and that might include not attending college. I think that there should also be a part of the program that teaches on the financial impacts of making good grades and doing well in high school. That way that anyone interested in college can understand the implications of having to take out loans. I feel as though that would be a beneficial addition to the website. Overall, FinU is a great idea that is meant to tackle a major issue within present society.
