Did the Punishment Fit the Crime?

In a word no. In the episode "White Bear" of Netflix's Black Mirror we are introduced to the character of Victoria who wake after a supposed suicide attempt in a world where she is not only shot at as well as put under serious mental, but the entire time she is being recorded by onlookers. At the end of episode it was revealed that the entire ordeal was a punishment for Victoria. Victoria's crime was aiding her fiance Iain Rannoch as he tortured and killed little Jemima Sykes recording every sordid moment of it. As her punishment she is forced to suffer the way the victim did however this punishment which seemingly seems to fit the crime one must be tortured the way victim was all the while being recorded. However there is a problem with this punishment Victoria doesn't remember her crime. After the days torture Victoria's memory is erased and she is forced to endure it day after day. The fact that she is being punished in this way says that it is not about justice, but rather revenge.
The punishment could work if she actually remembered what was happening. To be able to feel and understand what your victim went through at least in this world could work, but it doesn't matter if the person suffering can't even remember who they are let alone what they did to be tortured as such. If Victoria could remember what she did and what happened only occurred once that could be reasonable if a bit cruel. This would allow Victoria to empathize with the victim and maybe be on the road to rehabilitation in prison. However the fact that Victoria has no recollection of her actions and the torture occurs everyday makes it cruel and unusual punishment thus making the punishment no longer fit the crime. There are ways to punish someone in ways that don't stem into ridiculous and rather pointless torture that only benefits the viewers who reveal in someone else's pain day in and day out. And that is not justice.

I agree with what you said when you said that the punishment would fit if she actually remembered what was happening. Because she is disoriented every time she have to go through the punishment, how could she know what she did was wrong? However, I would still say that putting someone else through torture isn't solving the problem because it is adding on to it.
