Uncanny Robots

In Black Mirror’s "Be Right Back," we see how advanced technology can get and how it can affects us emotionally. Martha and Ash was just a regular couple in the technological world. Then, Ash dies, and I feel like Martha went in too deep into technology. I feel that Martha talking to computerized Ash was not a bad idea. I personally probably would have talked to a dead person’s computerized self to maybe talk to them one last time or out of curiosity. But, I can’t really say, because that thought has not even come up in my mind when someone has died. I could be so caught up in my emotions that I might engaged a conversation for more than a day. I do not think I would actually order the body of my loved one. That is just … uncanny. Having someone that died back in your life, but it is not really them. It is just a part of that person’s mind, their digital self. They do not really have any real emotions either. With Martha, you can see that she went a little crazy with the whole situation with the robot Ash. After years went by, she kept him the attic. Why would you not get rid of him?  I feel as thought she did not fully grieve and get over old Ash. She did not give new love a chance, she could've found someone else that could’ve made her life better or happier. She also won't have a partner to grow old with. She is going to age, and Robot Ash is going to stay the same age.

I can see how robots can become something that actually happen in the future and is acceptable in society. I can see them doing chores that people do not like to do, but I do not think it’s wise to have a emotional attachment to these androids. Having life-like robots may be creepy now, but I think as time goes on and we see more and more of them, it will become a cultural norm. The question is, will we be able to tell the difference between these androids and humans? I am sure in the future they would be able to make the androids smoothly move so that they are not so robotic.

In class when were looking at who was more creepy, Michael Jackson, Kaitlyn Jenner, or the realistic robot; I thought about it later and the robot is not really that creepy. Growing up watching many science fiction movies, it’s not really that strange. It is actually quite exciting that we are getting to that point in technology.

I think the same about ordering a body to make me feel better. It would never be the same. Probably the first impression could make you feel better but it is not really the person that you love.

I also agree with the fact of ordering a robot to recreate a human being will never equal up. But then again the point that technology is steadily moving and what may be unusual now will soon be normal.
