The Waldo episode of Black Mirror is about politicians getting derailed by a cartoon bear named Waldo. Is this similar to
what just happened in our presidential election? Absolutely! One year ago when
we heard that Donald Trump was running for President of the United States, we said
things like, "There is no way he will win, but he is hilarious." He
really mixed up the usual banter of the candidates. So why is it that
characters like Waldo and Trump can throw off these politicians that have spent
a life time training to be in the spot light?
It is because people are tired of
the same ole same ole coming from politicians. It is a known fact that to be a
politician the biggest prerequisite is to have a good poker face. They have to
be able to lie and cover up mistakes in their own lives. Everyone will make
mistakes and make bad decisions, but typically our mistakes are not talked
about on national television. Obviously some mistakes are greater than others
but in the end there will never be a perfect candidate.
In this election, most people did
not vote for a candidate they liked, most voted against a candidate they could
not stand. To me, that speaks volumes about both candidates. This year’s
election was definitely one for the history books. The whole country was going
to change no matter who won.
So how did Donald Trump beat
Hillary Clinton in the Presidential election? Trump is a very honest person,
even to a fault. Some may say he is vulgar and offensive, but at least he says
what he thinks. Most candidates try to be “politically correct”, so you never
know what they actually think. Hillary had a big scandal with her emails being
deleted. This made a lot of people nervous about whether or not she is trust
worthy enough to lead the whole country. This made Trump’s honesty even more
loved by the country.
So in this film, Waldo mocked the
politicians, which kind of resembles Trump’s attitude towards the typical politician.
People began to love Waldo, just like they did with Trump. Waldo and Trump
alike used radical speech in their public debuts. This caught the attention of
the general public. Then all they had to do is hook them or make them dislike
the opposing candidate just a little bit more than them. It was a very close
race but I think Trump’s blatantly honesty attitude is what lead him to
victory.
