First let me start off by giving the definition of uncanny valley and what it means to me. According to Webster's dictionary uncanny valley means the phenomenon whereby a computer-generated figure or humanoid robot bearing a near-identical resemblance to a human being arouses a sense of unease or revulsion in the person viewing it. I think that uncanny valley is very true in definition. The discussion in class was right on point giving the fact that we as humans are very much so ok with the idea of things looking like a robot. But once that robot/ non-human thing start reflecting a human looks and actions, then that's where it becomes a problem. In today's society robots and gadgets have almost become a crutch in our lives. We include things like computers and cell phones in our daily activities, that if lost those things we would not know what to do. With that understanding what I don't know how a humanoid robot can be considered more familiar than a stuffed animal according to the uncanny valley graph. I'm pretty sure most humans had a stuffed animal or two, especially in their childhood. I bet you that most people haven't ever seen a humanoid robot. A humanoid robot is a robot that has the physical appearance of human like qualities but not enough to think they were a human. Almost like a transformer. The uncanny valley has a very go point of emphasis on people are ok with the idea of puppets (Bunraku puppets) which are weird to me but for the most part society as accepted puppets.
As far as the video goes. I found the video we watched in class very interesting. The lady who lost her soul mate is the definition of weird! She wants to play with the idea of the dead coming back from the dead expect the new dead person is a better version than the old. I feel that since she has played with that idea she has become blind to reality. One top of that the fact of the new dead person not being an actual human being. But she continuously do human-like actions such as having intercourse and trying to get this non-human (robot) to have feelings and reactions as if it was a human. I understand she has feelings and is trying to cope over a death of a lost one but there are ways to achieve that.
