Are Humans the Real Monsters?

After Monday's "Black Mirror" film, I think it is safe to say that humans are the real monsters. Humans are the real monsters because we are inconsistent with our thinking and we can create almost anything. Can you see how the two can be a terrible mixture? With the intelligence and technology to create almost anything imaginable, inconsistent minds are dangerous.

During our discussion on the "Uncanny Valley," we learned that humans are more afraid of non-human objects that seem more humanlike than objects that may have a few human qualities, but we can still tell that they are not. This is understood because humans inherently do not like to be deceived. In which, I can agree with as well.

Just think about it. If someone can make a robot appear to be human, humanity is kind of doomed. Why? Because that means we can create robots that look like people we know; we can frame them for doing terrible crimes. We could possibly replace professors with robots, or even go as far as dating robots (as we saw in the film). While it appears to be a good thought, if robots are too advanced, our humanity as we know it could be wiped away.

As I stated earlier, humans (for the most part) have inconsistent minds. We are often too extreme with our thinking, or we don't think everything through. People think it's okay now, and it is indeed cool to have robots for our CONVENIENCE, but convenience should never replace the actual works, emotions, and feelings of a human. I believe that no matter how much a robot is built like a human, you can never fully give it human reasoning.

To even reverse the argument, I think it is ironic that we are afraid of things that seem too human. It kind of makes me think that we know we're a little unwelcoming at times. So, to other objects: please, be less like a human. We are terrible and frightening. I think we all can admit to it in one way or another. It's funny that we associate flaws and imperfections with the essence of being human, but if those same flaws and imperfections were put into a digital or robot form like Ash, would we still accept it? Since we really do have digital versions of ourselves. If everything you ever did digitally was put together to make the new you, could you imagine yourself being confident about it or ashamed because of what might be revealed about you?

I don't necessarily think that humanity is doomed but I do think that being able to recognize the differences between robots and humans can be threatened. Because of the advance in technology all the way up to now, there is no telling what could come out of technology in the next ten to twenty years. Everything could be different.

The difference in human beings and Ash 2 in this film is very small. While he had very human like characteristics, he lacked the main thing that makes human beings humans: a soul. Technology will never be able to accomplish making a robot have a true conscience. While we can engrave rules and manners into their hard drive, they will not be able to make many decisions unless there is a human controlling there every move. Saying this, I do not believe that life as we know it is doomed, yet everything can change with the evolution of technology.
