After a sudden accident, Martha's boyfriend, Ash, died. The new baby is coming after the funeral. When Martha was the most helpless, she had no one's company. She missed Ash so much.
Ash's mother helped Martha register for a service. If you enter Ash's name, the system will automatically search all the information about Ash on the internet ,all micro-blog, his comments, all the photos, the language, behavior, and then simulate an Ash which is very similar. But it's virtual. The long years of virtual service helped Ash's mother during the most painful time after she got out of her husband and children.
In the beginning, Martha just wanna talk to Ash 2 to make her feel better. Later, she wanted more "I want to hear your voice." So this huge magic system received all saved on the Ash's audio and video data, a few minutes later, Ash 2 called back. Martha talked to Ash 2 every day, she shared her daily life and their collective memory to Ash 2, it seems to cover over the fact that Ash is gone.
One day, Ash2 asked, "Do you want further service? It's not cheap." Ash 2 said he can do more and appeared in Martha's life. She purchased the material that can make the robot and transported all the data to it. Ash 2 is alive. His appearance, his body, his skin, his texture, his voice, his tone, his behavior, his temperament, very similar to Ash. He can sit and eat with you, he can hold you in arms when you are sad.
However, Ash 2 is only a copy. He does not get Ash's soul. He kept repeating what Ash said on the Internet, making Martha feel he's not real. When they had a fight, Ash 2 just followed what she said, and, because of the rule of the robot, he cannot hurt her. Ash is fake, not real, and his actions are determined by the program. All facts just show Ash 2 is just a big lie which makes Martha want to get rid of him.
The human is so fragile, use another feeling to make up for the hurt. The wound did not heal, she just covered it up for a while.
She wanted him to leave her life by jumping off a mountain. On one hand, she was determined to change her lifestyle, on the other hand, she let this "human" cry. He would cry which made her hesitate. She yelled "it's unfair" "No". She's so helpless.
When she had no way to deal with it, she chose the same approach Ash's mother made.—Avoid. When her husband and child died, she put everything about them in the attic. Martha put Ash 2 in the attic and just lets her daughter talk to him once a year on her birthday.
The robot is treated like this since it doesn't act like the actual Ash, he only has the physical part without his own soul. However, if the robot has free will or implanted her husband's soul. Will the robot still be willing to stay at home when she feels unsatisfied?

I agree with your sentiments that humans are fragile and that Martha tried to substitute her pain for other feelings. I definitely think that this entire process of interacting with Ash #2 is unhealthy and leaves Martha stuck with this sort of tainted memory of a man she once loved.
