Is the Digital You Really You?

Within the Uncanny Valley, we perceive things as creepy when a nonhuman looks like a real human. If you were to look at one, you would definitely mistake it for a real person. In movies or videos, it is not as creepy; instead, it is cool and interesting to me. On the other hand, seeing one in real life close to me would be very creepy. I do consider Ash in Be Right Back creepy because he looked like Ash, he talked like him, and he conversed with her like Ash would. Although he was programmed to say things that Ash had said before, that doesn't make him Ash. Moreover, Dr. J mentioned that there was a digital version of us. I do agree that we will still be in the "cloud," just as Ash 2, but I don't think that it really is us. There is a difference between being there physically conscious, than having a programmed digital you. Ash 2 is not Ash to the aspect of his soul, having a conscience, and being conscious.
It was mentioned that Ash 2 behaved more like a human than Ash. The real Ash was always wrapped up into his phone all the time, not really tuned in whenever she is talking to him. Yes, Ash 2 paid attention and talked to her more, but he was programmed. He wasn't programmed in certain areas when it came to jumping off a cliff or arguing. This is because he doesn't operate as a human, or do basic functions of humans (eating, sleeping, etc.). You can't put the digital you in the real world and assume it is the same person.
In reality, we were asked if we would take advantage of the emailing, phone call, or body if we lost a loved one. I have not lost anyone close to me to the extent of really knowing if I would take advantage of those options. However, I still think I would not take advantage of it. I say this because it would hurt to much to even heal from the lost. I can't imagine emailing, receiving a phone call, or having the actual body of my deceased love one. Once your soul leaves your body, you are not there anymore. You do not exist as a flesh and blood presence. The deceased can be there spiritually, in your heart, and you can reminiscence through the "digital" them (pictures, reading old text, etc.), but that is it. Overall, technology is advancing more as time goes by. We may even get to a point where these robots will be walking around looking real and considered as normal. Technology is the future.
