The Outsiders

The 2016 election is considered to be one of the most memorable elections so far. One of the main factors that made this election so intense was the issues going on in this country. Many people are finally tired of the problems within the U.S.; therefore, change was important in this election. The "Black Mirror's" "The Waldo Moment" shared similarities with the 2016 presidential election.
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were head to head throughout almost the entire campaign. Hillary Clinton was a First Lady as Bill Clinton's Wife, the Secretary of State, and a candidate for presidency. As involved as she was in politics, she portrays a political figure that maintains a certain status quo that the American people want to see a change from. Like Donald Trump, Waldo, a fictional, digital, blue bear running for a position of a member of parliament, was a candidate that represented a political figure different from the norm. Waldo's supporters new that a reality of a fictional bear as a member of parliament would be ludacris, yet they supported him because of how his ideas deviated from the normal ones that were imposed through the current members of parliament. Donald Trump had many supporters that did not like him, but liked his different ideas. He was the loophole that steered away from the political norms that people were tired of. For many, it was an advantage that Trump had no political experience because that meant that he was more involved as a member of  the general public society. Both Waldo and Donald Trump were considered outsiders during their campaigns because of their lack of experience as political figures.
Donald Trump and Waldo were obtaining an incredible amount of attention, mostly if not entirely from the media. They both were what some might find offensive and insulting. The more attention they got, the more the people would notice how different they are from  traditional candidates.  Any attention benefited them because it made their names popular and relevant.  In the end, in the 2016 presidential election, and in "The Waldo Moment," the supporters seemed to be enlightened by the idea of change that many people long for. Both Donald Trump and Waldo voiced a lot of facts that were unpleasant to recognize, yet important to be made known. In both cases, a large amount of awareness was brought unto the people with help from the media. Media Portrayal  and attention can have a great impact as was depicted in the 2016 presidential election and "The Waldo Moment."

Throughout your article, I thought about the saying "no publicity is bad publicity." This played a huge roll in both the election and in "The Waldo Moment."
