Donald the New Waldo

This election was not the most picture perfect situation I could imagine for my first presidential election to vote in, however; as a citizen of our Country I feel it necessary to express my rights and vote to the best of my ability.

The two candidates for this election both have many flaws that everyone knows about.  Turn on any news channel and get on any social media app and you will basically know every mistake possible either party has made.  Though Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton did have this in common, that is basically all that can be said is similar between the two.

Just like in the Waldo Moment, the media and technology played a huge role in the election.  Personally, I see a lot of Trump's similarities that the producers tried to tie in with the Waldo character.  The most obvious of these was that just like we have seen in Donald Trump, we also saw Waldo not watching his profanity and many crude comments.

Another similarity is that neither Trump nor Waldo are politicians.  This was a huge aspect of Donald Trump's campaign.  He is not like the past, he is something different, something far out, someone who has not had a life stuck in a circle of politicians.  I believe this was a benefit that Trump used to his advantage.  It is obvious that Americans want change in our country and Trump showed that he is not afraid to be different and go outside of the "norm" in politics.

As I mentioned before, in The Waldo Moment and in the Presidential Election as well, the media played a huge role.  Day in and day out you would continually see Waldo in publicity just like we always saw Trump in the same publicity as well.  Whether you liked it or not, his name got out there a lot more than Clinton's.  Even if this was bad publicity, eventually the public seemed to get numb to the bad publicity of Trump and some just decided to focus on what his campaign was all about... the fact that he is not a politician and he has out of the box plans to improve America.

The last correlation that was discussed and I agree with about Waldo is that, just like Trump, no one considered the idea of the public latching on to Waldo.  While watching the electoral votes all come in on TV last Tuesday night all that was said over and over is how no one could believe that Trump was taking this away from Clinton.  It was unthought of from the get go.  Media and the people of our country in general just did not factor in the notion of the main differences Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have... that she comes from politics and he does not.  Just like Waldo started out as a vague idea so did Donald Trump and when it came down to the wire, Americans started taking Trump more seriously and also decided to take a chance on the "something different" they were being offered.

Sarah, I agree with your insight on the correlations between Waldo and Trump. Clearly, from what you stated both campaigns are very similar. Some might say, for those who voted against Trump did not take him serious, nor was Trump taking it serious, just as some would not take Waldo serious or even as a joke. On the upside, regardless of a 'puppet' having influence may be obscene, Waldo ended up being such an influence to their country. The doubt people had on Waldo makes me wonder if it will be the same for Trump? As stated in my blog, I am indifferent with the both Clinton and Trump, both had flaws and both had strength and proposed great ideas. Regardless, we need to make the best out of the outcome and continue the support for the new President-elect.

The media did indeed play a massive part in securing Trump's win, which may have been his goal. With his radical statements and controversial ideals, Trump was always featured in all corners of the media. Many of his more radical promises he has relaxed or abandoned, such as his promise to see Clinton to jail and to completely wipe the new healthcare system, instead choosing to keep parts now and relax his tirade against his opponent. A businessman rather than politician, it would not be a surprise if he does not carry out many of his campaign points, instead using them to get his name on the mind of american voters, pulling many that did not have a serious knowledge of either's real goals. Advertisement is key to securing successful business.
