Mentality Reality

Our group consists of Eric Rodriguez, Joseph Ferrante, Bri Bell, Chris Fagin, and Michael Turner. Our project is a website helping relieve metal illnesses. Our mission is to help many people overcome the everyday or on and off problems faced from mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety or panic disorder. We will include music, art, and dance videos, and other games to help those diagnosed overcome their obstacles.

As I was listening to this presentation I felt that there was no actual invention. It seemed like it was just a website with definitions and symptoms of Bipolar 1 Disorder, Bipolar 2 Disorder, Anxiety and Panic Disorder; Along with videos that they made personally. I really liked how they took the time to make their own videos for there website. However, I still do not see an invention that they came up with. It seems like they just compiled a whole bunch of information onto one website. There website seems similar to this website called Bhope Magazine. The Bhope Magazine website talks about anxiety and bipolar disorders, the symtoms, ways to treat it, inspirational quotes, and certain types of therapy. However, what it did not have in this website were actual videos or art or musical therapy. I feel that having this in the groups project was a good idea. As I was watching the videos I actually felt relaxed. My favorite video that they had on there was the one with someone drawing a picture of Mickey Mouse. It was really satisfying to see the person retrace the drawing and make it darker for some reason. I also enjoyed watching the video of one of the group member’s dad dancing to show an example of dance therapy. It was nice that they give the person the option to watch a serious dance therapy video like the one with the ballerina or a funny one which was the one with one of the group member’s dad dancing. The coolest video they had on there was the one with one of the members showing how to play the guitar. This individual was really great at playing and I really enjoyed it. I feel like more could be added to this website though to make it more unique. For example, they can add some sort of calendar where they show events where they can experience therapy in person. Like for example, here in Memphis Tennessee there are lots of plays at the theater, dance shows, and art gallery shows that they can add into the calendar of events for those who enjoy art\dance therapy. Some college campuses bring dogs on campus to help with the stress of finals. Overall, this presentation was great but more should be added to make it more unique and stand out above the rest of the other websites.

While focusing on mental illness is always a plus and good idea, I feel like this website fell a little short. The videos were interesting and very unique. Unfortunately, that was the only part of this project that seemed to be new. As someone who suffers from anxiety, I could appreciate the idea of a website like this. However, I would still prefer Youtube where I can find whatever art vides I want from real artists and musicians. There are more than just one to two videos. Also, expanding the different types of therapies one could use would also very much improve this project. As Camille already stated, a calendar promoting local events that would be better for people with mental issues than a simple quote a day. I was actually surprised when the calendar did not have any local events. When I have anxiety to the point where I cannot function, I don't like being on my laptop. Going out actually helps me. But every person is different and maybe someone else would enjoy staring at a computer screen for hours for comfort. This is a nice idea, but once again, the internet already does this. The website just compiled them. The videos were cute and worth the watch. But Youtube already exists. Also, a budget for a website seems a bit weird. Of course, there is a maintenance fee for having someone actually create the website and keeping it running, but wasting money on people to make videos seems not worth it since we could use that money to create real events for people to attend. Maybe using the money to have an art fair or book fair or something of the sort would actually help treat mental illness. Wasting money on creating videos that someone would watch from their laptop seems a bit too much. I do praise the idea. I just feel like it should have gone a different way. Maybe speaking to people that actually deal with depression, bipolar disorder, and/or anxiety would have improved the project significantly. People with mental diseases are not just definitions. But real people. Maybe if this project were to become a reality, getting opinions from people who the website is supposed to be designed for would help. All in all, this was an intersting idea. Spending more time on the website and the research would have helped make this more relatable to people who do suffer from mental illness.

First off, I would like to say that this project resonated with me since I have severe depression and minor anxiety and I can say first hand that therapy is expensive without insurance. I really liked the focus on the facts and spreading awareness of mental illnesses. A lot of people that I talk to don't understand what depression or anxiety really is and I am sure that bipolar disorder is misunderstood as well. Getting over these illnesses is all about a change of mindset and finding little things throughout the day to distract you and brighten your mood. Mentality Reality aims to do this by compiling things that people frequently use to escape into one place. Mentality Reality offers art, dance, and music therapy all in one place. I could definitely see people spending five minutes on Mentality Reality and brightening their day. However, my issue was that the site was shallow and didn't have a draw over other sites. Why use Mentality Reality over just looking at videos and YouTube or other such sites? In fact, the videos on the site were originally from YouTube anyway. The site was basically just a glorified compilation of videos. In conclusion, I love the concept and I think that if the idea was reformed, this could be an amazing tool for people with mental illness.

I really like this project because it addresses mental illnesses. People who have no experience in this themselves or through a loved one, often misunderstand what its like to have a mental illness. The site had the definitions and symptoms of bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression. They also had some tips on how to comfort one who suffers from these disorders. I thought this was good for spreading awareness since many people hear of disorders but never really look into it. The site they made was to help those who suffer from these disorders by providing calming forms of therapy such as art, dance, and music. They had videos up for each section with ballet dancers, guitar players, etc. It's a good idea but all they really did was compile specific videos on their website from Youtube. Wouldn't it be better to just use Youtube where there's a much wider range of videos to watch?

I liked the idea overall but I feel like it was lacking. There wasn't anything that made it stand out from other websites I've seen that are created specifically for this issue. I feel like they should've added more advice on how to cope. Everyone is different so things like book recommendations, calming locations to visit nearby, maybe some arts and crafts ideas would've added more quality to the website. They could also add in a chatting section so that those who are suffering from these disorders can reach out to others who understand them. Maybe have some games so that they can play with one another. Again, I really like the awareness this website spreads but it doesn't really stand out.

I want to start off by saying that this has the undeniable potential to become a real thing. I feel like the minds behind this project is what pushed it to be as good as it was. The overall presentation was very flush. However, like all things, you must start small and build a name for yourself. I believe that that will ultimately be one of the biggest obstacles in you all's path. In cessation, I've decided within myself that this was the most effective of the projects presented in this fall's phil 220 class. It was rightful so that it was the final presentation.

Mentality reality is probably the most useful projects of the class. The concept is so easy yet so simple. I love the fact that you can just go on to the site and get the help you need. The site is really easy to navigate and anyone can get on it. I love that it offers several different ways to help people with their mental health issues. The quotes and prayers on the site seem very helpful. You really never know what people are thinking or feelings so it could really brighten someone’s day. The different types of ways to help with the stress are simple and something that everyone can do with just a little practice. The music lessons are short and easy and playing an instrument is something everyone thinks about doing. The art lessons seem super easy and quick after watching the short video you can just draw it simply. I only had one question after the presentation which was, “How are you going to expand the instrument choices?” In class you answered by getting teachers to teach which seems easy to do and cost effective because some people may do it for free because they support your cause. You guys talked about finding through donations which would be a great way to get money based on the issue. Overall this was a great project.
