Why Lie?

The film that we watched in class called Catfish, was both weird and ridiculous because of how far a certain person would go to lie to someone else about who they are. This film focuses on a man named Nev Schulman and this relationship he began to develop with a women named Megan. He met ‘Megan’ through a famous young ‘artist’ named Abby pierce. She sent Nev a painting of one of his photos and they soon became friends on the social media network called Facebook. That’s where he also became friends with Abby’s mother Angela, her father Vincent, her brother, and her half-sister Megan. At first they constantly messaged each other through text and Facebook messenger. Eventually, they started talking on the phone. One day he asked Megan if she could sing a song for him so that he could use it for a video, she agreed to it and in the next 20 minutes, she sent him an audio. At first they were surprised about how amazing it was, however, they eventually found out that it was a cover song that she took from youtube and uploaded it to him. He started to realize that she was lying so she might not even be who she says she is. He wanted to end their relationship but his brother Ariel and friend Henry wanted him to keep going and see how far this other person would go. He decided to do more research on the famous Abby and started to find more lies. Eventually he ended up doing a surprise visit to Megan’s house in Ishpeming, Michigan. Angela, Vincent, and two boys were at the house. No Megan. Even though he had called the night before and she said she was at home. Angela welcomed them inside her house and Nev asked for Megan but Angela got a text message from ‘Megan’ saying that she has a drinking problem and that she wanted to do something about it. Later in the film he confronts Angela who he knows is ‘Megan’ and asks her to admit it. She eventually does confess but in the end, she adds in more lies. It just really does not make sense on why people would go this far and deep into a lie. Angela created so many fake friends to make it look like Megan was popular and real. She also lied about Abby and her paintings, Angela was the one doing all the paintings. However, out of all the lies, I believe that one was okay because her dream was to be, and artist and it never happened but now she was getting thousands of dollars for the paintings. In conclusion, I believe that people who do this have very low self-esteem and have a compulsive urge to lie constantly to make their lives seem better. I also feel that people who catfish others don’t really have morals. They just think about how they feel and not how the other person will feel.
