Catfish is a documentary that follows the life of a young
man named Nev, He grows a love bond for a girl named Angela who he has never
met. They will only have communication by text messaging and by phone. But not
once did Nev see her face or inn person. With this being said, Nev fell in love
with her voice which was not even her, it was a famous singer from around town.
Nev discovered this when scrolling through online where he notices that Angela
and the famous singer sound just alike. When Nev decides to confront him about
it, Angela says it’s a “song cover” it’s supposed to sound the same. In the
back of Nev head, he knows there is something fishy about everything that she
has been saying. Since she never wants to video chat, Nev suspicion grows
bigger. Until one day, He finally decides to visit the pace where supposedly Angela
is staying, which was Michigan. When they find her location, they see Nev’s
unread letters that he had sent from the beginning. At the end, we discover
that Angela is indeed another person who was impersonating. We discover that
Nev was being catfished by Angela’s mom the whole time.
I’m pretty sure that Nev has not been the only victim of catfishing.
There has been many cases where the victim goes and visits the impersonator and
are killed in the moment. Or cases where victim have their bank information
stolen and even their identity stolen. But the question is... How far will
Catfishing go? How can we protect those that are being tricked?
To begin with, I believe the smartest solution is to realize
that not everybody you meet online real. People that use the social media a lot
need to start taking precautions before giving anybody any type of information.
Making sure you video chat with the person is a sure sign that they are real
and will prevent you from getting hurt. Many reason are behind catfishing, like
an easy way to get money of other people, stealing information, or even just
for their own amusement. Social media users need to be smart and think twice
with who they communicate with. A person can be blinded by love or sometimes we
just need somebody to talk to in a form of a friend. But this is when impersonators
come into our lives and trick us.
