Love and Catfish

What is Catfish? It is a informal meaning of the luring of someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona. As humans we are bound to connect to something that we are interested in; especially when it comes to someone whether it be a male or a female. It is in our nature. A few years back in 2010, a young photographer by name Yaniv Schulman also known as “Nev” gained an interest in a attractive girl name Meghan accor online through facebook as mutual friends. Meghan was a dancer and singer. Nev was not only captivated by her beauty but by her personality and amazing talents she had. Daily their messages and conversations over the phone grew to romanticism and they soon developed into a relationship. Although they’ve never met in person, Nev thought it was time to take that step. He wanted to see Meghan face to face after such a short period of them getting to know each other. But some things just didn’t seem to add up. Nev had suspicions about Meghan due to unexplainable explanations she had given. Nev decided to do a surprise visit to see her in rural Michigan. He then found out that everything he was a lie. Nev had been catfished. The lady who posed as Meghan online was in Angela-Wesselman Pierce, a painter. The action that was taken place was not right but Nev was understanding enough to figure out what was her motive behind the creating Meghan and other people she added. Nev was heartbroken to find out that the girl of his dreams wasn’t what he expected. I feel like the documentary was beneficial especially to those who are currently in online relationships. You never know who you are really talking to. Nev’s story was a great example of how you careful you should be and not to fall in love so suddenly. Throughout time technology has come into place where it tends to give us that connection with people though I prefer doing things the old fashioned way; getting out and meeting someone. Although Nev had fallen for someone whom he had thought he could develop a relationship with he played smart and kept his eyes open. Now he tends to have his own show, “Catfish” to help other people find love and heal from a broken heart. “Life experience is what defines our character, even if it means getting your heart broken or being lied to. You know, you need the downs to appreciate the ups. Going on the adventure or taking that risk is important.” - Nev Schulman
