White Bear

Black Mirror’s, “White Bear” was a eye catching episode yet disturbing and unsuccessful to me. The story starts off with the main character, Victoria in a house setting seemingly being recovered from a suicidal attempt. She  was confused about everything. She didn’t know where she was or even her own identity. Throughout the story she was plagued with bits and  pieces of memories of her, her  husband and a little girl who Victoria presumably thought  could be her daughter. Victoria becomes terrified of this world that is against her. Throughout the show you could see people following Victoria with their phones in hand not saying a word, but just capturing pictures and videos of her. It was like their minds were in a trance due to some nationwide broadcast signal. Those who weren’t affected by this wore mask and chased Victoria with a violent rage as if they were possessed. Even though all these things were going on Victorisurvived with the help of a couple of people. Eventually another person enters posing a friend, Baxter, a sneaky hunter. In the end the people whom Lenora thought was saving her were against her. At the end of story Victoria was found guilty of the abduction and murder of a little girl by filming her husband doing the foul action. Due to this Victoria is tortured daily in front of an audience. Personally the whole plot of “White Bear” was weird but a bit uncomfortable. With Victoria being found guilty I totally disagree. Victoria shouldn’t have had to go through that terrible ongoing process. For all we know she could have been coerced and forced by her husband to do the action. This episode does not show that. Also I honestly feel that the treatment towards Victoria wasn’t fair, embarrassing, and unbearable. The mockery was unjustifiable. Saint Augustine once said in the form of a quote “Punishment is justice for the unjust.” For those who took part in the act of this unjust treatment displayed a sense of stupidity. I did like the fact that cellphones the people had symbolized how we record everything we see depending on the situation. We’re so quick to whip out our phones and post it on social media showing the world the unfair and negativity that we encounter on a daily basis. Negativity is subject to outweigh the positivity because of the world we live in.
