White Bear

White Bear. New For profit jailing system? 10am

The episode of white bear starts off very disturbing and confusing. There is a lady who basically wakes up with no memory of her past or present self and is in a house alone. On every TV screen there in a weird sign. Throughout the episode we find that there is people in the town she’s in following her but not saying a word to her; instead they record. She frightened and afraid but she has someone there to help her. She is chased by a man with a shotgun and two other individuals with weapons. Not to mention the total lack of nourishment she has. Towards the resolution of the episode we see that the lady we have been following the whole show is an accomplice to a murder. Her and her husband kidnapped a little girl blocks from her own home then later tortured then killed her. While she did not perform the acts on her own, she sat there and recorded it. Her husband was not a part of this act because he killed himself while imprisoned, so they are taking out all of the punishment on her.   A question that was raised in class was “Is the act of recording or witnessing a crime such as this the same as committing it?” My honest opinion is of course. She was there the whole time while this child was away from her family. She played with the child made her feel comfortable and then watch as the little girl was tortured, killed, and burn. There is no excuse for this. It was brought up that she may have battered wife syndrome which may be true, but where is her humanity? This wasn’t a criminal or someone who done an injustice to them, it was a little girl. This lady deserved life imprisonment and maybe even the death penalty, but this treatment she is receiving is even worse. They made a theme park where she is reliving what the little girl went through. Of course they are making money from this. This makes me think are the people conducting and participating are just as sick as the lady or worse. Who wakes up in the morning ready to torture a criminal; especially one who does not even remember her crime. The lady does not even know who she was. This is definitely cruel and unusual punishment and that’s totally against the constitution. The fact that there is a theme park dedicated to this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
