Was she suppressed? Catfish post

     Sometimes its human nature to want comfort or want importance in life. There is a limit to what a person can handle on not being heard or not being able to express what they want. Angela, from the movie Catfish, seems as though she is being suppressed, but who exactly is doing the suppressing? Her husband in the interview said that he gave Angela an option that she was free to choose what she wants and if she wants something for her own happiness, then she should go and get it. From her husband’s statement, it doesn’t seem as though he is the one holding her back. It’s more like Angela is holding herself back and suppressing herself.

     From her conversations with Nev and his friends, Angela says that her husband is not aware of what she is doing online and that the multiple profiles she has is each part of her personality trying to come out. It seems Angela was confused on what she wanted while she was catfishing Nev. It also seemed as though she was suppressing what she really wanted and suppressing all her emotions. She only showed her emotions through the profiles she made. While she was confessing to Nev, she was not too ashamed of what she did because according to her that was the way she was expressing herself. Even though Angela justified her actions by saying it was a way to express herself, her actions were still wrong.

     Nev was very understanding when Angela confessed to him. He acted mature in this situation and did not react aggressively. Even though he did not react doesn’t mean that what Angela did was ok. She was wrong, but it’s also important to see why she did what she did. She wanted to express herself and in the environment she was in it seemed as though she did not have much chance of doing just that. She had to take care of two disabled kids which was a huge toll on her. After one of her kids passed away, she then started her own website of her art collection. The commitments in her life weighed her down and suppressed her own wants in life. This suppression was so deep down that she even lied to Nev saying she had cancer so, she could gain sympathy towards her actions. If Angela didn’t have such high commitments in life, then maybe she would not have done what she did.
