There are no strings on me...

The Terminator, Ultron, Androids in almost any sci-fi film, and the annoying nature of C-3PO; what do all these things have in common?  We fear or are disgruntled by all these characters, but why? One reason may be that society has implanted seeds of fear into us through varying outlets. Most of these outlets focus on the annihilation of the human race through the rebellion of robots; robots who continually learn and further their grip on humanity. I like to refer to this as the "no strings on me" phenomenon. In Marvel's ,Age of Ultron, Ultron states, once he is independent of the Avengers commands, that he has no strings on him. Hence, Ultron causes panic throughout the whole world because even the great and mighty Avengers struggle to thwart his plans. Furthermore, I believe this to be the root of humans fear of robots, that is, a lack of control.

So, how does all this fear of robots transfer itself into a moral dilemma? Well, humans, from the beginning of time(based off a Biblical perspective), have enjoyed being the dominant species on Earth. Genesis 1:28 states: "God blessed them (male and female) and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth." Hence, in my opinion, the thought of robots disrupting any order that God has put in place can be frightening to many people.

Robots are not frightening to us because they are more efficient, smarter, stronger, self-sustainable, and forever youthful. No, we are scared of robots because they threaten the one thing that humans have enjoyed since the beginning of time (also, based off a Biblical perspective), which is the hierarchy over all other species. Furthermore, if history has taught us anything, it is that mankind is hostile to anything and everything that challenges its' way of life. Just as the Egyptians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans all utterly annihilated anything that contradicted their culture and traditions; each in their own respective ways during each's reign of global domination, so it is the exact same in today's culture to decimate anything that disrupts the status quo. Mankind is too comfortable with its position at the top of the food chain to allow any possible form of contradiction to take root. All strings must be attached.

Do you think that peoples fear of technology is well founded? I get the impression from reading your blog that you feel like future advances in autonomous machinery and a.i. should be something we aren't afraid of.
