Be Right Back, The Uncanny Valley

Listening this week in class and watching the episode from the Black Mirror series have opened my eyes to a new world. Of course, I have always been aware of robots and their advancing capabilities however, I never took the time to think about how advanced they can really become. As we looked at the Uncanny Valley Chart I was intrigued at the "unfinished" research that was presented.  The chart showed the point at which humans stopped liking the robots and began to get uncomfortable. As I was listening to the lecture and understanding how the chart worked, I soon realized that I did not truly understand. Though, I understood as I was watching Black Mirror. Watching that show made me understand why there is an uncanny valley. In the beginning, I was okay with the main character Martha texting and talking on the phone with the computer Ash. Although, the moment that Ash 2 arrived in that box I became uncomfortable and it all started with Martha having to put him in the bathtub. No matter how real Ash 2 was suppose to be I could never accept it. Plus, it seemed as Martha felt the same way, because it was easy for her to see some of the main differences between Ash 1 and Ash 2. As a result, she got put him in the addict and moved on with her life. This is why I stand firmly with my answer that Ash 1 and Ash 2 are not the same person. They make look alike and sound alike but Ash 2 will always just be a cheap knock off to Ash 1.  In the future, I know there will be things like this to emerge and become normal. Yet, I hope there are some rules and regulations that must be put in place to control the robots. Just as we discussed in class America has concerns about the advancement of robots and one big concern for me is jobs. Will these robots come into our world and then work place and if they do, will they become competition? This is a main example where there should be robot laws in place, simply because this should not be a fear to have going into the future. All in all, even though this entire topic is creepy, it will soon be our reality and I am excited to see what the future holds.

Kenya, I also agree with you on that Ash 1 and Ash 2 are not the same person. All Ash 2 is doing is mimicking Ash 1. Ash 2 may sound, look, and act like Ash 1 but he will never share the same thoughts and feelings that Ash 1 felt thus I agree that they are not the same person.
