You're Irreplaceable
SOMEONE HELP , TECHNOLOGY IS TAKING OVER! Over the last week in Dr. Johnson's philosophy class ( contemporary moral issues) , we discussed various forms of technology and even watched the episode 'Be Right Back' from the series 'Black Mirror'. Robots are being built more advanced every year in different forms . Some of these robots take over out every day lives. For Example , My phone is my world, without it I am NOTHING . My phone keeps me from growing into a hysterical asylum patient in this dark society. We are becoming so close to have these robots walking among us as if they were born a human being . They can take on all different races , personalities, and genders ! How creepy is that? That's when the 'Uncanny Valley' comes in! Study shows the more humanlike the robot or animation the more uncomfortable it makes us . We will dislike whatever it is and will most likely just turn the channel. Black Mirror's episode 'Be Right Back ' showed a PERFECT example of this theory . It starts with a woman named Martha and her husband Ash. They are apparently heading to his childhood home to live. Ash comes off a jerk and a phone addict. He is completely ignoring Martha when she implied for help. Scolding coffee was in her hands , yet he couldn't seem to notice. She had to keep reminding him to be present in their reality instead of the fake reality that everyone loves (social media). Overall, you can tell Martha has a very deep love for him , and cares for him unconditionally.
The next morning , Ash has to return something . I think it was whatever they used to storage all of their belongings on the trip. Martha doesn't want him to leave , yet he has too. SPOILER ALERT: HE NEVER COMES BACK. His cause of death was never really stated, but I'm guessing he wasn't paying attention to the road. He was probably scrolling through Facebook having the time of his life before he saw the light, or maybe he swerved the car trying not hit a deer or something. We'll never know ! The funeral is skipped and we teleport right into the repast. I wonder if the repast had wonderful food? Anyways, this very annoying family member pesters her about this program that 'helped her' making Martha have a very unladylike like outburst. She is signed up for the system, and ends up giving it a chance. REALLY MARTHA ? The system is basically a robot that gathers all the information that it cane about the deceased , and pretends to be them to help with griever. Everything from pictures to social media updates and saved recorded phone calls. The system can even see what you see through the phones camera. IT CAN EVEN CALL YOU WITH THE DECEASED'S VOICE! I don't know about you all, but I DO NOT want any dead loved one still speaking to me unless its Michael Jackson. Anyone other than that is a waste of time in my opinion. Throughout the episode you can notice Martha becoming more emotionally attached to the system after she has a unnecessary breakdown about dropping her phone. It was right after she had her first prenatal appointment, so I blame the hormones.
She literally apologizes to robot like it actually has feelings. I was really starting to worry about her mental health. Robot Ash then tells her about a experimental physical copy of the of the system. He also mentions to her that it is sorta pricey, and she immediately agrees. The creepy thing is...... THE PHYSICAL ROBOT ACTUALLY APPEARED HUMAN! Martha has to be one of the bravest people I've ever saw because I would've ran for my life. However, the robot was missing simple features that the REAL Ash had like a mole. He also couldn't intimately respond to Martha like the REAL Ash had. It upset her terribly, and she was very ashamed. We all have done things that we aren't proud of. She hides him from company, and tells him to basically commit robot suicide off a cliff. In my opinion , that scene was incredibly awkward and it could've ended without her screaming like a maniac. We teleport into the future again to see her and her daughter going to visit the house. Martha looks really well taken care of. The daughter goes to the attic to visit where systematic Ash is stored. He is just standing there.......awkward. Who just stands in a basement like that? Martha doesn't seem to see him. Maybe she was disappointed in herself , because I sure was disappointed in her.
The robot Ash in the attic almost seemed completely normal though. Is this what they mean when they say robots will be able to walk among us without be really recognizable ? Technology is moving way faster than the advancement of human beings. Will we really be able to handle robots being a everyday sight? I don't think I would like it very much . I would feel uncomfortable and paranoid ALL OF THE TIME. Hopefully, Jesus comes back before that happens! Until then, I will pray.

You are not the only one paranoid!!!
I agree that Martha’s mental health was in shambles. It was so bad that it ultimately caused her to get the robot. It was very extreme.
