Are They Who They Say They Are ?

Nev Schulman is fascinated by Abby’s art work given the fact that she is so young and so talented, thereby developing a long-distance relationship with her and her mom Angela because they live in different states. Throughout their relationship Nev takes pictures of different things/places where he is and sends them to Abby so she can paint them and in exchange he receives paintings, emails and telephone calls from Abby’s mother as a follow-up. Nev eventually starts receiving friend requests from Abby’s family on Facebook, and among those requests is Megan Faccio who is Abby’s sister. Nev eventually is intrigued by Megan and how talented she is and both of them eventually start texting and talking to each other which results in a romantic relationship. However, Nev eventually starts suspecting that Megan isn’t who she portrays to be which sparks doubts in Nev.

Nev eventually realizes that Megan has been lying to him about the songs she says she has composed because one day when Nev is with his friend they search the lyrics to one of Megan’s songs, and realize that Megan has stolen someone else’s work by saying she wrote it. Nev also starts doubting his relationship with Abby’s mother because some things just don’t add up such as when he wants to speak with Abby and either Angela says, she is not around or she comes up with some excuse. Nev eventually realizes he is being Catfished, therefore he decides to fly out to Gladstone, Michigan and prove that his relationship with Angela and Megan is a lie. When he arrives unannounced he realizes that Megan is really Angela which leaves him shocked because he has been carrying a relationship with Angela who is Abby’s mom. He also comes to the realization that Abby doesn’t really paint and instead the artwork he has been receiving has been painted by Angela as well. Angela eventually confesses to Nev that she has been lying to him the whole time which Nev already knew. By watching Catfish, I realize that social media can influence and even deceive a user if they are not careful and alert which we see happen in Nev’s case because Nev doesn’t realize he is being Catfished until he realizes theirs gaps in everyone’s stories. Catfish itself is a really good show because it allows viewers to realize that this is something that can happen to anyone, therefore it bring awareness to the audience who sees it.

I still do not know whether to feel anger toward Angela for setting Nev up for failure, or sympathy because this was Angela's outlet. This gave her a way to escape the pain of everyday life by living vicariously through alternative personalities. Like she said in the film: These impersonations were people who she wished she could have become, people she used to be, or people that she never could be. I agree that these films/shows are great in bringing awareness to catfishing. I will definitely be more careful with who I meet online!
