After Ash died Martha had the typical reaction. When her friend said that she had a way to speak to him she made the choice to take the opportunity to do that. Talking to him on the phone for me was ok because it’s just a voice on a phone. Her sending the android videos and pictures so the voice can sound authentic as possible if also fine, however, when she bought the actual synthetic body is when it gets weird.
As hard as the android tried it was never the same as Ash. Some qualities were close but never the exact same as Ash. She had to teach him certain mannerisms that Ash was born with and ultimately couldn’t be taught. When Ash 2 would say anything that Ash 1 wouldn’t have said it ruined the experience for her. It just reminded her that Ash was dead and this “thing” that she bought couldn’t replace him.
For me personally I couldn’t have an android to replace a person I’ve lost. To me it’s just not the same. I would have to sit down and teach this android everything about the person they are supposed to be. Going through all those memories would just make me miss them more and make me realize that the android just isn’t enough. If I couldn’t have the actual person I just didn’t want to deal with someone pretending to be them. It just wouldn’t be the same.
Martha also realized it towards the end of the episode. The meaning of Ash 2 being stored inside the attic to me meant that she felt the same way as me. To me it seemed as though she got to the point that she actually dealt with his dead and came to terms with it. She no longer needed him to be super present in her life. In regards to her and Ash 1’s daughter Ash 2 was a way for her to learn certain things about her dad that otherwise she would have known. Instead of her mother having to tell her what her and her father have in common and the features they share she can go to the attic and see or ask for herself. That’s the only good part to me about having the Ash 2 android.

Ash 2 never lived up to the full expectations that Martha was looking for in Ash 1. I feel like the daughter was not aware that Ash 2 was a prototype of her father.
