Catfish

During this week of class, we watched the film, Catfish. Catfish depicts what I'm sure happens on social media, which is false portrayal. People will exaggerate their physical qualities as well as other things. This is done because of insecurities and wanted to project themselves as someone they would rather be. Another reason is because they would rather show real fragments of themselves through someone else to detach from reality. This is what happened to Angela and Nev in Catfish. Nev interacted with Angela through social media. Through Angela he met Megan, Abby, and other people. Nev began to like Megan on a romantic level and talked to Abby about her paintings. After a while, Nev began to see inconsistencies with Megan’s identity. After he confirmed that Megan had to be a fake page, he traveled to see Angela and to get the full truth.  There he found out that Angela was behind all the accounts.  She made the accounts, that were fragments of herself, to free herself from the realities of her world. He found out that Abby doesn’t really paint, but Angela does all the painting. Angela claimed that there was a Megan, but she was in rehab, which wasn’t true. There was no Megan. Angela later told Nev that she had cancer, which she didn’t. Angela came off as a compulsive liar, but it was a sad situation. It made me feel bad for her that she felt the need to pretend to be someone else. Nev handled the situation well even though it was obvious that he was hurt. Catfishing is not only harmful to the one being deceived, but to the only is deceiving as well. No one wants to feel betrayed going into a relationship. Even though technically Angela and Megan are the same person, Nev wanted Megan. He had already had a face to go along with the personality. Meanwhile, Angela was married with kids. Nev fell in love with someone who didn’t even exist. It was extremely devastating for Angela to twist him in her lies.
