White Bear

This week episode "White Bear," was extremely perplexing to understand and watch. It begins with the main character, a woman, waking up after what seems to be a suicide attempt. Her hands had been tied up and pills were scattered around her feet. She seemed dazed and confused as to what had happened previously and there was a strange sign presented on her TV screen. She got up trying to recognize her surroundings and stumbled on a young girl that she presumed to be her own daughter. She leaves the home seeking for help and realizes she is being recorded by neighbors. It was eerie seeing them record her because they seemed almost robotic due to them not speaking and only recording. It was like they were oblivious to her cries for help. Then, a man begins following her trying to kill her.  It was such an intense moment that I sympathized with her. I was pleased when she finally reached a woman who seemed to be normal and help her. They were to run down south to turn off the transmitters that were sending signals and corrupting everyone. While trying to escape, the come across a man that seems to be unaffected. That is until he turns on them and attempts to kill and crucify the woman in the forest. They get away and drive south where the transmitters were. Then, the woman was supposed to save her turned on her. It is later revealed to be a play and everyone were actors.

It is later acknowledged that the woman participated in a monstrous act with her fiancée.  The couple kidnapped, tortured, and killed an innocent young girl. While he did most of the dirty work, she sat back and filmed the entire thing. Her fiancée killed himself, but she has to endure her punishment. As her punishment, she is electrocuted and must fight for her life as she relives the scenario of the death of the young girl. The town is in on the whole thing and they put on this act seemingly daily. But what good is it really? She definitely deserved to be punished for her atrocious behavior. However, I just don’t get the point of having her complete this scenario daily if she doesn’t even understand why she’s being punished. She never remembers what she did until it is revealed and even then it doesn’t really seem to affect because it’s not in her memories. I understand the town wanting justice and wanting to give her punishment, but playing out this plot continuously is outlandish.  It makes you question the sanity of everyone involved, honestly.
