The Future of Communication
The episode of Black Mirror about Ash and Martha left me with lots of questions on what the future holds for people that have lost someone close to them. I personally feel that Martha has not accepted Ash's death in the way that a normal person would, but then the term of normal coping is also bought up. After a person passes away everyone has a way of coping differently with death so is there really a normal way of coping? I personally believe that having a way to "communicate" with someone after they have passed would be something very cool. living in the era of technology we are already so attached to our cellphones, computers, tablets, etc. I know that I personally have love ones that I have lost that I would love to be able to communicate with in anyway. Being that it has been many years since my loss I still have moments of longing to hear the voice of the people that I have lost. This is especially true of the people that I have lost that were not "into" technology so there are not voicemail's or photos of them. That being said the thought of an A.I. like Ash 2.0 to replace a loved one seems rather extreme to me. I am left wondering if I believe that Ash 2.0 should be considered a person. While he looks like a person and feels like a person and also has the memories of someone who was once alive i find myself leaning more in the direction of him not being a person. I believe this because he doesn't have thoughts of his own. This is visible when you see that Martha is working on something and Ash 2.0 is just in the background seeming to be waiting for Martha to tell him what to do. Also he doesn't breath or need to eat to live. When Martha was told him to jump off the cliff he was going to do it almost without considering the fact that it would kill him. In the end I think it isn't the fact that Martha sees Ash 2.0 as a person that keeps her from killing him. I believe its more a fact that she has become attached to the memories he holds for her. He has in some become a part of her memory of Ash and killing Ash 2.0 would in some way be like killing Ash all over again. I think her attachment is what keeps her from killing him not the fact that she considers him to be human.
