A second chance

The second group presented their project named "Second Win" and how it helps homeless people get back on their feet and be reunited with society. In their presentation they showed a couple slides on how we as people treat homeless people. They asked how many of us give them money food and etc. It turns out that the class was mix of all three and often times we act as if we do not see them. After that they pulled up a video about a homeless couple that sells newspapers not to far from CBU and how they have managed. The point of their program is to get homeless people off the streets and into the working environment so they can provide for themselves and overall get that second chance to succeed in life. Another great aspect of their project is the amazing website and app they have. The website features a video of a homeless veteran getting a haircut and the before and after appearance is shocking in how he went from looking like a homeless man into a high class working professional! They also have an app where people can sign up and be a part of their program and also provide services to the homeless in areas like grooming and teaching basic working skills. To me, all this was amazing but what really caught my attention was the point system they implicated into their program. The way it works is if someone attends a community service event, they get points added to their name(around 15-35 points per event), and also everyone begins with 100 points. However, if a person does not show up to an event they lose points. In the event that a participant misses a lot of events and their points drop to zero, they are kicked from the program with no questions asked.
The reason I took a lot of interest into that part of their presentation is because it will help show what homeless people are actually willing to put time and effort into changing their lives and getting back in the society. I know for some homeless people it can be hard, but just the smallest strain of effort can take someone far in life if they stick with it. Also, in their presentation Dr. J brought up good point that the Second Win program should provide housing with an address for homeless people so when applying for jobs they are able to put one. Other than that, I see nothing else wrong with this creative and charitable project that the students in our class came up with.
