A Virtual Facade:Catfish Documentary

In the documentary Catfish, the film focuses on a New York photographer named Nev who creates a bond with an 8-year old precocious painter named Abbey over the internet. The little girl would create paintings of the photographs that he would take, and sent them to Nev. Over time, he would become close with the family, especially the older sister, Megan. As they continued to interact with one another, Nev begins to notice some inconsistencies about the woman he has been talking to and begins to doubt whether or not if Megan is who she seems. He even contacts Megan via a cellphone in order to find more lies and discover more about what she is hiding in the process. He eventually figures out that the person he has been talking to this entire time was the mother, Angela Wesselman. Feeling heartbroken and betrayed, Nev, along with his brother and friend (Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost) set out to find and confront Angela. Once they arrive, they get to meet Angela in person and get to take a look into her life and struggles. After she is caught in her own lie, she apologizes about all of the pain that she has caused Nev and they share a painfully awkward (and a bit weird) moment together. As the video concludes, it is shown that the duration of Nev and Angela's "relationship" lasted about nine months and they have exchanged over 1,500 messages. It's also shown that there are a few things that she has said to Nev during his visit were also lies ( ...specifically her cancer).

This documentary was quite a peculiar one. It's not every day that your "true love" turns out to be some 40-something-year-old lady who's married with kids and a husband. It amazes me how far someone was willing to go to make a lie convincing no matter what the future consequences may bear. Given her circumstances, I'm sure that Angela just wanted an escape or to just have some kind of excitement in her life. I can understand that, but what she did really did affect someone. It doesn't help that constantly lied throughout his visit either. She just wanted to be pitied so that she wouldn't seem so much like a bad person. I personally don't think she is cruel despite her actions, but her lying was really annoying me. I wish she would just give up, but then again, what if she is slowly believing some of the things that she spews? She should just learn how to be true to herself, and stop being in bad faith. There is also a lesson we should all learn from this too. Be careful who we interact with online and watch out for catfish!

I totally agree with you over Angela because I was just amazed by how she kept lying to Nev and how far she took it as to where she almost made it seem like she believed herself! I didn't believe it was her to begin with because I never would have suspected it was her with a husband and 4 children doing the cat fishing and talking explicitly to Nev. But I guess that's the whole point of cat fishing lol.
