Nev is basically the main character in the documentary, Catfish, along with Henry and Rel. Nev began to get paintings from a girl name Abby, who paints randomly and supposedly owns a building in Michigan that auctions her pictures. Nev began to communicate with Angela, Abby's mom, about Abby's painting. Shortly after being introduced to Megan, Abby's sister, Nev started to show interest in her. The two have been communicating every day on social media and on the phone. The two potentially started to date. As the two began to date, Megan sent Nev songs that are supposedly for him and sung by her. After a while, Nev soon discovered that the songs are written by other artists or they're covers from other artists. None of the songs belonged to Megan. As soon as Nev found out, he started questioning if Abby and Megan are real.
When the thought ran through Nev's mind, he began researching the building that held Abby's paintings for auctioning. It turns out that the building been listed for about 4 years. As the lies keep growing, Nev and his crew decided to take a trip to Michigan. After arriving in Michigan and visiting the barn house that Megan supposedly lives, they discovered that the house was empty, the letters he sent was still in the mailbox, and Megan obviously didn't live there.
After a period of time, Nev and his crew found the real address to the house and ends up meeting Angela. Angela looks nothing like the painting Abby painted of her. Soon as Angela introduces Nev to Abby, he also discovered that Abby knows nothing about painting. As the picture starts to come together, they realized that Megan in Angela. They also discovered that the person who painted all the pictures was also Angela.
After all that Angela has done, Nev still decided to stay in contact with Angela through Facebook.
My Opinion on Catfish
After the documentary, my professor asked a lot of questions about the film, Catfish. One question that rose was up struck a huge discussion. The question was, "Do you feel sympathetic for Angela?" At first, I felt sympathetic because she lived in her own little fantasy hoping to find love, even though she a had a whole husband. She also had a stressful life dealing with two disabled step-children and a child, with one of them passing away. Who could balance her daily work schedule? Her painting pictures must've been a better way of relieving stress. That's probably why she was in the situation she was in now (catfishing Nev).
However, there are better ways to handle stress. She could've taken a yoga class or a meditation class to relieve some stress. Playing with someone emotions is never okay at any circumstances no matter what the situation may be. I was surprised that Nev continued being friends with her on social media. Wouldn't she just continue lying to him? The more she lied, the more I thought she was crazy. As our professor stated, after the documentary, many people interviewed her. Angela was still lying to interviewers about her illness. After lying to the interviewers, I was convince that she had to have psychological issues.
Nev continued to keep calm during the situation, which I admired. If I was in the situation he was in, I wouldn't have handled it appropriate. Another thing I admired is Nev not being overly dramatic about being catfish. He didn't take all his anger out on her instead, he confronted her in person and take about her actions, which lead to some emotions. Personally, I wouldn't drive all the way to another state, but I would confront them on social media, which lead me to thinking why didn't Nev just convinced her over the internet and call it a day. I assumed that he confronted her in person because it got her to think over her actions and the consequences that could've came along with it.
For me being a catfish, I would've never look back on my actions because I was on social media and thought I could get away with it. In my opinion, I was doing the morally right thing in my situation. To my dismay, as I grow older, I realize that my actions was morally wrong and childish. No one deserves to be catfish no matter what the circumstances may be. Till this day, I have yet to catfish anyone.
