The Act of Actually Acting

The saying "treat others the how you want to be treated" comes to play in every day life. It's one of those every day things that we live with. Not just treating others with respect but also treating others in a just manner, regardless of the circumstances. We live in this society where things are seen as "you did this to me, so I'll do this to you because of that." It's all a sense of revenge or sometimes just a way of getting even and making people pay for their actions. But why go through all that just to hurt someone? Aren't you then a bad person as well? Taking into consideration the Black Mirror episode "White Bear", Victoria did something that most of us wouldn't do.. or maybe some of us would.. depending the circumstances. She recorded her fiancé while he tortured and murdered a little girl and the whole time she did nothing, nothing at all, to help the girl or stop him from hurting her. She stay there and watched it all happen. Some may say that she was wrong to have just recorded what happened but when we come to think about it, how many of you would have interfered? This happens in our lives every day. We cross paths with situations that could be helped or even prevented if we just interfered but instead we stand on the sidelines and watch it all go down. Maybe it's the fear of what might happen if we do get involved that seems to stop us from trying to help. We hate to hear about those who have it worse than us but most of the time we don't try to help. In Victoria's case, she sat there and watched it all happen and recorded every second of the journey. She said that she was "under his spell" and made that her reason as to why she did it. Her punishment was to have her memory erased and live every day of her life in a never-ending scenario that involved her running around in all these crazy settings meanwhile everyone is just standing around, watching, and recording her. While she was near the end of the whole scene, it all ended up being some cruel form of punishment for her actions, actions that she had no clue she had committed because her memory was erased every single time. She had no clue who she was or what was even happening and at the end of it all, she comes to learn who she is and what she did, but what for? She won't remember it and has to relive the same thing just for the entertainment of others. What form of punishment is that? The man in charge of the whole thing seemed to very proud of the whole setup, mostly because he, along with others, was highly upset with what had happened to the little girl. But wasn't he just as bad of a person for doing this over and over to Victoria instead of just punishing her like all other criminals should be punished? What if that same form of punishment was placed upon him, would he still have the same point of view or the same justification for doing it? Overall, believe it or not, we live in a world where we tend to see everything that goes on around us, but we do almost nothing about it and we come up with countless excuses as to why we didn't act on whatever was happening... also we sometimes don't seem to care as much about the guilty individual and think of countless punishments and cruel acts for them to undergo just so we can say that "yeah well they deserved it", but what if we were the one's stuck in that same exact position where we were the guilty ones and our wrong doings were then turned into some form of 'park', would all the same circumstances still apply? Although respect and justice all come into play what really matters is, why think of doing the right thing and think about how you could possibly make it better rather than actually going out and acting upon it and making the outcome of the situation different than what it could be if you just stood around and thought rather than acted?

I see your point in this post but I do not agree I believe if I did something that harsh I should be punished accordingly. But overall it did open my eyes to see where you were coming from

I totally agree when you say if it really is a punishment if they keep erasing her memory. If they truly wanted it to be punishment they would have never erased her memory so that she could regret taking a video of the girl. Instead it seems like they are just torturing her to make a show out of it.
