In the episode, "White Bear," a woman wakes up in a room not being able to remember anything. When she tries to look around the room, she see pictures of a young girl and a man, who she believed was her husband and child. She also noticed a symbol on a tv screen in the room. She, then, leaves the house, asking for help, to find her child. She noticed that everyone wouldn’t respond, they would only record her. As this went on, a man, with a mask that had the symbol from the television screen on it, pulled up with a shotgun and attempted to shoot at the clueless woman. After he misses, the two run until the woman meets two people who actually interacts back, Damien and Jem. Attempting to escape, the woman gets Damien killed by not following through with the plan. After escaping the sight of the masked man, Jem explained that a signal on all digital screens turned the city into people who could only record their surroundings. The woman was not affected when she looked at the signal; however, it did trigger odd memories that allowed her to remember some parts of her day, but not enough. Jem also explained how she thinks eliminating a transmitter, "White Bear," would stop the signal. They're eventually picked up by a man who the woman felt she knew. After the man denied knowing the lady, she began to tell Jem and the man that she felt that he would take them to a wooded area and it wouldn't end well, as if she had been through the situation already. However, the man convinced the woman that he knew nothing of what she was talking about, but ended up in a wooded are, just like she said. As they're in the forest, the man, held the two at gunpoint, but Jem escapes, whereas the woman was left there to almost be tortured by the man. Luckily, Jem returned and killed the man, allowing them to get closer to the transmitter. As they reached "White Bear," two of the hunters tried to attack, but the woman found a way to retrieve the shotgun from one of the hunters and shoots it. Instead of a bullet coming out, there was confetti, and after the confetti popped, the walls behind her shifted, which showed a crowd of people cheering for the whole scenario. The two hunters and Jem walk to the front of the crowd, which revealed that they were a part of the set up, as well as the man the woman thought she knew. As the crowd cheered, the actors all strapped the woman onto a chair, where she is explained what exactly is going on. They explained that the young girl from the pictures, who the woman thought was her daughter, was really a girl who was kidnapped by the woman and her soon-to-be husband, the man in the pictures. The young girl was not only kidnapped, but she was also tortured and killed by the fiance, and recorded by the woman, whose name is Victoria. This would explain why everyone was recording Victoria’s pain and suffering. She also learned that the symbol for the signal was inspired by her fiancĂ©'s tattoo, and the name "White Bear," was inspired by the young victim's teddy bear. The episode concludes with the actors setting the scenario up again, which included erasing Victoria's memory.
In my opinion, Victoria before the brainwash and Victoria after months of brainwashing are two completely different people, mentally. The brainwashed Victoria woke up knowing nothing. She was convinced that the girl in the photos was her daughter. The new Victoria had different characteristics than the old Victoria. She had no criminal mindset; she only wanted to find her "daughter." Even when she informed of her crime, she was in shock that she had done such. This was not justice because torturing the brainwashed Victoria is like torturing a new person every day. I agree with the fact that she can never say she didn't commit the crime; however, this "an eye for an eye" justice system should never be put in place. This is because the system would need people to repeat the crime, but on the person who committed the crime, thus creating a never-ending line of criminals. In addition, I feel that the punishment should have been placing Victoria in jail, where she has to live with what she has done. There is no purpose in torturing a person who has no idea of the crime she committed.
