White Bear

In the Black mirror episode, "White Bear", the main character Victoria wakes up confused and unsure of who she is. She goes through a day of being chased and hunted with people just watching and videoing even though she screams for their help. As the day draws to an end she is on a stage with people clapping, she gets strapped into a chair and forced to watch what she did. She kidnapped, tortured and killed a little girl with her fiancé, and they made her go through exactly how the little girl felt, but at the end of the episode they show her memory being erased and the whole day reset again because what she is going through is just a show for the people. I do not feel making her go through it everyday qualifies as justice because if they erase her memory then how is she supposed to know what she did and think about it? I do think erasing her memory once and making her go through it is enough because I believe if she has no memory of it she can experience what the girl went through and watch the video and see how messed up it is. Then make her sit in jail for the rest of her life knowing what she did and having that feeling she had when people watched her just as she watched that little girl. I think the people in prison would know what she did and make her life in there suck. I think the white bear people erasing her memory every night aren't really having as much as effect on her as it would if she had to sit there with those images in her mind for the rest of her life. I think it would be cool if we could actually use this sometime in the future because sociopaths have no remorse for the crimes they do, but if they could have their mind erased once and then watch what they did and maybe live through it once like the White Bear people did, then they could rot in prison with those feelings. But ultimately, I don't think this is a good form of justice, not only is it bad for the people watching because it shows how messed up they are for watching someones pain for entertainment, but also bad for the people who are putting on the show, what makes them any better than the people they are torturing? What do you think on the idea of using this form of punishment in the future?

Hi bailey, I really enjoyed your blog. I think that the corrupt world we live in will only get more corrupt if we use this in the future, it would conform people's minds to think it's alright to use torture as entertainment. Thanks for asking Bailey!
Love,
Callie
