Catfish Schmatfish.... Angela is Crazy

In the documentary, Catfish, the main character, Nev, tries to uncover the secret behind his online girlfriend, Megan. They were together for about 9 months, but his brother started to have suspicions about who she really was. Together, they went to the middle-of-nowhere Michigan to try to uncover the secrets behind “Megan’s” identity. When they arrived, pieces of the story started to unfold. It turns out that “Megan” was really a middle aged woman named Angela, who was married to a dumb man with two handicapped sons from a previous marriage, and a ten year old daughter, Abby, that the two had together. Angela was a sub-par artist that she lied about to Nev, saying that the paintings were all done by Abby, “Megan’s” younger sister. It was obvious that Angela was just trying to escape the challenges in her life by creating this elaborate web of a fake life and talking to Nev. Even after she was found to be lying about everything, she continued to lie about the circumstances that she was in. She said that she had ovarian cancer and had just begun Chemotherapy, trying to gain even more sympathy, and even said that Megan was her daughter that had been in a mental institution for the past few months. It turned out later that the cancer was also a lie, and she didn’t have a daughter named Megan at all.
Her way of catfishing was very complex, and the audience could see how much time and effort Angela put into creating her story. She made up “Megan’s” Facebook profile, using pictures of a random girl that she found on the internet (although she told Nev that the pictures were those of an old family friend……but that’s none of my business) to create her story. She also created many more profiles of fake friends, family members, etc. to make Megan seem more believable. Honestly I think that Angela was a pathological liar, and kind of insane. The way that she manipulated Nev into believing her story was so crazy and thought out, she obviously had a lot of time on her hands.

I’ve been catfished before and that whole experience was crazy too, although not as crazy as Angela and Nev’s. I can definitely sympathize for him in that way. However, I don’t feel bad for Angela at all. Someone needs to just unplug her wifi router and make her sit and think about what she has done.

Agreed. The fact that she lied about having cancer, on top of the whole Megan situation, is sickening.

I agree with the fact that what Angela did was wrong. Although, I believe that her usage of lying was a way of keeping her fantasy alive.

I can't say that I don't understand her reasoning behind why she has done what she did. She clearly was living a life that was lackluster, and she wanted to find a way to escape that life. It's ok to want to escape. However, the way that she has done it was not the way to go. She toyed with someone's feelings regardless of how it would affect her or him. It doesn't help that she lied even more to seem more empathetic

I feel bad for Nev. I can no longer say that it was Angela's situation that pushed her to lie because she continued lying even after Nev called her out. I think she knew what she was doing and is obviously very good at lying and manipulating people and situations.

I'm not going to lie, I laughed when I read your post lol. You laid out the facts just like they were and after reading your post, I side with you. I believe she needed attention but there are better ways of getting it. She didn't need to do all that she did to get it.
