Catfishing Aint Just a Good Meal

In the movie, Catfish, a man is completely lied to by a woman who literally pretends to be someone she is  not. Nev, the man being catfished, believes he is buying art from a woman's daughter who is very talented at painting. However, later on in the movie Nev begins an online romantic relationship with Angela's alleged daughter. Nev soon realizes that it is the woman all along who is pretending to be all these different things just so it seems like her life is more interesting than that of a normal person.


I think it's amazing how Angela can literally continue to lie even when she is exposed by Nev. She went as far as to say she was diagnosed with uterine cancer just so that she could get out of a sticky situation. Even when Nev continued to ask her if Megan was real, she continued to say that she was real. It went much far than just exaggerating, she completely lied for 9 months. On top of this she was married with three children.


Technology made it very easy for her to catfish Nev because she was able to make multiple people and act like all of them. It is very easy to lie to people when you're hiding behind a computer screen. You can see people's physical reactions when they are lying such as lack of eye contact, stuttering, and fidgeting. Technology makes it easy to lie to others because there is no actual physical interaction to catch the lie. Nev and his brothers went back and forth on if they should expose Angela. I believe they exposed her correctly, they didn't do hatefully. They still gave her some dignity in the end which is very respectful. I think the message of this movie would be that you shouldn't act like something you aren't. It also shows how people put too much faith and trust into others. I think as a society there needs to be less trust in a way just to protect yourself.
