Fishcat

So in class we watched a movie about the first person to get "catfished" aka lied to about what that person looks like and/or what their life is actually about. This is actually a pretty big deal in the world that I think does not get addressed as much as it should. Catfishing has grown into such a big ordeal now that social media is a part of everyone's daily routine. In the movie, Angela is the person lying about everything and she got off easy in my opinion. Not to say that technically she wasn't doing anything "wrong" but the boys were so nice to her about the confrontation I don't think the movie makes it look like catfishing is a big deal in itself. Not only, like in this movie, are middle aged married women doing this but it can also be happening among criminals. In just about any crime show, at some point there usually is a man catfishing younger children to gain their trust and possibly kill or sexually assault them. I like how the guys handled the situation in the movie because Angela just wanted a different life and that was her way of doing it, but on the flip side, catfishing is such a wrong and horrible way to do anything and could possibly lead to something dangerous, not saying that everyone who is catfishing is a dangerous person but there is at least one person out there who might use it for harm and even one person is way too many.
Even away from the topic of how catfishing is wrong, the audience can't help but feel bad for Angela in this movie because she hates her life so much she is making a whole new one online. To me it is kind of like an underlying message that if you aren't happy with anything going on than change it, don't try to be something or someone you are not. Although in her situation she couldn't just pick up and start and new life but she can try improving the one she does have. I believe we did talk in class about how this movie was able to help her and gain some confidence and present her artwork for herself, so hopefully something good was able to come out of that and the promotion from this movie. "Love the life you live, and live the life you love."

I agree with you saying that people feel bad for her because she stated that her life was awful. I believe that there are multiple underlying reasons for why she may have "catfished" the guys. Whether it was because she was a liar or because she was bored, or upset with her life. I would still say that what she did was wrong.
