Keep Calm and KeCa

The first presentation I saw was from the Boss Ladies. They began with a powerpoint on ways to cope with anxiety in this day and age. This slideshow cleared up many things about anxiety that I often misinterpreted. One thing would be how common anxiety and an anxiety disorder are two different things. An example of common anxiety would be how a person feels before taking a test, and an example of an anxiety disorder would be when a person starts to feel great fear or worry. What I took from this was the major difference is when the anxiety begins to interfere with your daily life. The group continued their slideshow with a list of anxiety disorders. They included generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, separation anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder. With the post-traumatic stress disorder, they explained how it has no age limit. A child could even get this disorder. They also explained how social anxiety disorder is the third largest mental issue, and some ways to trigger social anxiety would be by being introduced to others or being teased. To throw it back, the ladies included some history on anxiety disorders. The disorders weren't recognized until the 1980s, and the treatments for these would be medication, self-management strategies, etc. In the opinion of the Boss Ladies, they are convinced that their new app could be another treatment for anxiety. The app they created goes by the name KeCa, also known as Keep Calm. Their mission statement is, "to fortify or fix." This makes sense because KeCa would teach the user how to acknowledge their little victories in life. The Boss Ladies also explained what philosophers inspired their app. The philosophers included Jean Paul Sartre, Aristotle, and Immanuel Kant. They connected their app to Sartre because Sartre stated, "... having absolute freedom causes us anxiety." They connected to Aristotle because he felt that true wisdom came from examining objects of experience. Finally, they connected to Kant because of the same reason. Kant focused on knowledge from experience. To close out their presentation, the ladies explained their different features. One behind the scenes feature would be the use of color psychology. They used certain colors to trigger certain emotions. Another feature would be the task adding. A person could add and label a task and press complete when finished in order to recognize the small victories. This feature would have to be my favorite because the tasks have no deadlines. The work you need to get done may be causing your anxiety, so you don't need someone or something rushing you to complete it. In my opinion, KeCa is a well-thought-out app that could easily be a success. I would definitely use it, would you?

Honestly I thought this presentation was really solid. I rarely get to see a group do well on a presentation here in college as most people are really shy about the public speaking aspect.

But what I really enjoyed was the way they prefaced the app with information on anxiety disorders and I felt like I understood the background a lot better because of it. It felt like they were giving their app purpose in the beginning of the presentation and I really appreciate that as an audience member.

Thank you both so much for the compliments. I think that the background information was important to really show why our App would really matter. I think that personalization is key because no two people are the same and we all have different needs.
