Second Win

The idea of helping the homeless around the and in the Memphis area is a very good idea; that I think would help out many people. It does seem like there are more and more homeless around Memphis, or maybe we never really pay attention to our surroundings. When I see a homeless person asking for donations, I usually give them my spare change. It might not seem like much, but I am pretty sure that it helps them a little in some way. The idea the group presented, was something that would not only help the homeless get back on track, but it would help them have a new life. I don’t understand why us Memphians haven’t done anything to improve the situation of those homeless. It isn’t just the homeless now a day, but also low-income families, who sometimes don’t have enough money to buy two- three meals a day. Memphis seems to have one of the poorest communities in the U.S. but the government or just us Memphians in general are not facing the problem and instead we are ignoring it. Even though the group had a great idea, it did need some work to make it more suitable for the homeless. Like Dr. Johnson said in class the major problem homeless must deal with is having a place to stay. There are not many homeless shelters in Memphis, and the ones we have are small and overcrowded. Not having a home causes homeless have difficulties in keeping job or getting a job in general, because to start with to have a job you need an address. If we were able to create a system that would help homeless have a home that would be very beneficial to the homeless community. We would be able to take them off the streets and then they would be able to get a job and improve their way of living. It only takes one person to make a difference in the community, imagine if a couple of us came together. We could do so much good for our community; and it only takes a bit of initiative. People believe that homeless people are homeless because they are either drug abusers or alcoholics, but that is false. We need to learn more about their problems and try and help them solve them once and for all. If we do nothing to help no one else will, it is up to us Memphians to do the right thing.
