What is White Bear really about?

I actually watched White Bear over Easter Break but I honestly could not seem to find any real meaning so I rewatched it again. After watching it the second time, I concluded that the episode was about how people will watch things on social media and not even help. Additionally, how in today's society we often times just scroll through things with essentially just for entertainment. However, after Friday's class discussion, I knew that White Bear had an even deeper meaning or message than I initially realized.

The people watching were actually actors who wanted to be involved in the torture of this woman who honestly really had not really committed a crime. I feel that she had not committed a crime and she was just there and taped it. I do not believe she deserved the torture that was given to her over and over again. Let's also Talk about the other side and how inhumane it is for these people to eagerly watch while this woman is tortured day after day for something she cannot even remember doing.

I wholeheartedly feel that her punishment was inhumane and unnecessary. I do understand the crime was vicious, terrible, and evil, but torturing her over and over was excessive. Especially because they would wipe her memory every single time or day that she went through the process. Without her memory, she was not even able to remember who she was so she could not even comprehend why she was being punished.

I feel quite annoyed that her husband took the easy way out and hung himself in jail and she is still suffering. Equally, I feel the same about the death penalty. I feel it's the easy way out and it simply ends living with what you have done. If the husband would not committed suicide, was he going to receive the same punishment or was he going to receive something worst? If you wanted to use the explanation of an eye for an eye, then he would have to be tortured to death and killed. Would you have the same people that help torture Victoria help with this or would you find a new group of people? You obviously could not do it every day and wipe his memory because in his situation an eye for an eye would be him being tortured to death. This really could be simple for minor crimes but when it comes to heavier crimes like murder, it becomes way more complicated.

Lastly, this memory wiping machine is honestly just very creepy. I feel that memories play a huge part in making a person who they are because memories are made of experiences. Therefore, wiping someone's memory is highly detrimental.

I agree, Technology is causing lack of communication. We seem to ignore the world around us. For example, teens will isolate themselves from their family just to be on their cellular device, which is very disturbing. On the other hand, In White Bear these multiple actors are torturing Victoria and she has no clue who they are. If I could reform the group of people I’d choose someone she’ll be familiar with like she was with the picture of her child like her family. I also agree with the idea of how can a person know what they’ve done if their memory gone. A person must be knowledgeable of their act so they are aware of their decisions.

When I initially watched White Bear I thought it was about the bystander affect in social media too! I remember growing up seeing a lot of videos where a girl or a guy would be getting jumped by at least 5 other people and thinking to myself , " why aren't the people helping ?" After taking a course in psychology this so called bystander affect sort of made sense, but it still angers me to think about situations like that.

I think that its funny how your ideas on an episode of something can change as you rewatch it. The second time I rewatched White Bear was in class, and I did not think about social media one bit.

I agree that the punishment was inhumane and over the top. The crime she was paying for was watching, which is just as bad at taking apart in the action, but I agree to do all that mess to her was just...wow
