W.A.S.P. and It's Benefits

The first project presented in our class was W.A.S.P., or a website dedicated to supporting women through sexual assault. I thought that this was a great way to start off the project presenting process and they did a great job with the idea. This website and an app extension aims at helping women through the horrible tragedy if they have been raped. The group was well-educated in this field and they knew what they were talking about when it came to their creation. The statistics they presented really shocked me and unfortunately there were higher percentages of rape and assault in women than I previously thought. They also had a Prezi, presenting the problem, a website for people to connect with other victims, and a well-thought-out way of having the website function. It is easy to tell that this group really took their time on having a great solution to a prevalent problem. I loved the lay-out of the site and one of the better things that stood out to me was the page where one can donate to have rape kits be further examined. I didn't realize just how may kits that people have filed are unopened or untouched. These kits are done by people who are taking the proper steps to filing and reporting a rape and they might not even get justice in their lifetime. It is such a shame that people have to suffer even more after they have been raped and this is a worthy cause to donate and give back. Since the website is dedicated to connecting victims to to other victims, there is a potential for a hacker to get into the system. The chat room feature is a good idea, but I feel that a rapist could make an account and view what the other victims are saying and find out more information about the victims. This would need to be monitored and the group has this aspect in place, but there would need to be a lot of security to keep the intended purpose of the feature. I also related to this entire project because my group also addressed the issue of rape, specifically on college campuses. The epidemic that is rape is such a big problem and the general public needs to be educated in this field so that we can aid in stopping it from happening. The additional websites that the group added also made a lot of sense so that other groups of people wouldn't be left out if they also were affected by rape. Overall, this was a great project and I think that the acronym also made a lot of sense. It is a clever play-on-word that people will remember.
