Ryan Mabry Rape Prevention Project Blog

Doing this project has opened my eyes to many problems in society. I never realized the drastic statistics of sexual crimes against women. I feel as if people don't realize the importance and magnitude of the problems that women experience on college campuses and in life. Through this project, our goal as a group is to expose people to the ugly truth of sexual crimes and offer a way to combat the rise in the assaults on women in our community. The goal of this project is to raise awareness in the general public about rape. A survey found that one in six women in the United States has been raped. That is way to high a ratio. Society should hold men more accountable for their actions and men should take responsibility in these situations. Of those one in six women, 83% of those women were raped before the age of twenty five. This is truly astonishing. Young women and girl are being targeted yet nothing is being done to solve or even address the problem. However, rape doesn't only affect women. It affects men as well. Especially in the prison system, men experience sexual predation as well. This can lead to emotional, physical, and psychological damage to a person. Many men leave prison with STD’s and STI’s as a result. These facts should not become normal and shouldn't be thrown to the wayside. Society needs to make a better effort to stop sexual crimes and should also do a better job of accommodating the victims of sexual crimes. When looking into what happened to the people who were committing these heinous acts, a few statistics popped out at me. Almost sixty-eight percent of rapes go unreported. Whether these women feel ashamed or feel that they won't be believed I do not know. But this part falls on women. The fact that over ninety percent of rapists do not spend a night in jail will cause other women to have to go through the same ordeal. That was one of the problems that was targeted through the project the C.H.A.T. program. I liked the way that this group focusedd on recovery. However, I would like the to focus more on reporting crimes. As Dr J. stated, oftentimes rape isnt treated as seriously as it should because the focus isnt on catching rapists. But all in all this was a very well thought out and presented project.
