Catfish: the movie, revolves around two unlikely people
meeting through the internet. If you watch the TV show, it’s pretty different from
the movie. It’s a lot more confrontational which is something that I think the
documentary lacks. We began by feeling sympathetic towards Nev, but once we
were given a closer look into Angela’s identity and what her life is like, more
sympathy was given to Angela. A lot of the time, on the show and in the movie,
the one being catfished loses their sympathy and the one doing the catfishing
gains. Don’t get me wrong, I really do think that Angela’s situation is pretty
saddening and I can absolutely understand why she was drawn to doing what she
did. However, we never really saw Nev’s pain. We never saw how Nev’s life
changed after this. Of course if you watch MTV at all he obviously got his own
TV show setting out to reveal to people their catfishes. Another interesting
part about the TV show is that sometimes the catfishes are who they say they
are. And when they are who they say they are it’s because they usually have
someone in their lives that they’re already in a relationship with. And Angela
also had a relationship. Which brings us to, was Angela cheating on her
husband? From my perspective, yes. She is obviously really unhappy in her
relationship with her husband. She’s so unhappy in fact that she created an
entirely new world for herself in order to find someone that she would be happy
with. Her passion and talent for painting was never truly valued by anyone in
her life, except maybe her daughter Abby who put her painting of horses up in
her room. But even this doesn’t truly seem like anyone in her life valuing her
interests and talents. It also didn’t seem like her husband did very much to
help with the two children of his own. She treated his children as if they were
her own and sacrificed her life and devoted her time and efforts to these three
children. So although I can understand why she was so unhappy in her
relationship, ultimately her actions were wrong and dishonest and are indeed
considered cheating. If Nev had been fine with all her lies and her appearance
and situation, she most likely would have left her husband to be with him.

While I can see your point about her emotionally cheating on her husband and her actions were in fact wrong I must disagree with your opinion on her cheating. In most cases we have to live our lives based on what happens, not what we attempt to make happen. Would she have left with Nev if he accepted her? Yes! But, did that happen? No, they didn't live together happily ever after and she is most likely still with her husband. The fact she attempted to do something like this is very wrong, but she never made it happen thus never committed the crime. Its like murder vs attempted murder.
I totally agree with the fact that Angela cheated on her husband. Basically, she was married, and texting sexual fantasies with someone else other than her husband, how can this not be consider cheating?. Definitely, they are various ingredients that let her to create this fake world on social media. Like you said, nobody recognize her talents and her world basically spins around her kids. If her husband helped more with the kids, she will probably get to enjoy her world doing other stuff that she likes.
I think cheating is all subjective to what the couples have as an understanding of cheating. Someone might not care care if their girlfriend texts guys but another person might not care as much.
I agree that Angela did cheat on her husband, and would have willingly left him and her family if Nev was ok with it. I think because she pretty much gave up her life to take care of the three children that she really is not sure if she made the right choice. She feels as if she wasted her potential to be great, and she does not feel that was she does is appreciated. I can see why she did what she did, but a lot of people have what they consider to be crappy lives and they don't go around catfishing people. I hope that her selling her paintings has filled a void in her life and given her a sense of accomplishment.
I totally agree with that Angela cheated on her husband. I think the reason she cheated on her husband is for to escape her life that she was living now.
I think it's interesting that you bring up how Nev reacted to being catfished because they don't show it in the movie. It would have been very interesting to see what happened to Nev after this and how it impacted him.
I can see where you're coming from. I feel like that was wrong too and it could be considered cheating.
