Are They Who They Really Say? - The Art of Cat fishing
Originally meant as a way to stay in touch with friends across the world and connect with people across the globe, social media was a major technological advancement in the early 2000's. This new way to connect with people soon turned to the darker side of things for example, people did not realize how much of their information they were now putting online and how easily accessible it was. Other things were people posting inappropriate comments, pictures, information etc. Soon we found out though that you could be a completely different person with a completely different life online; this came with no connection with the actual person you knew of and no way of them knowing who you were. In the first episode of Catfish it follows Nev and a documentary with a woman( Angela) and her " family". Nev believes he is in a relationship with Angela's daughter Megan and is receiving fan notes and gifts from her youngest daughter. After a long flight and road trip they finally arrived at the actual destination of the Wesselman household to find out her whole internet life was a lie. She turns out to be a married woman in her forties with two special need sons and two daughters. For about two days Nev and his crew stays with her to find out the truth about her life. Her life actually is pretty sad in a way she feels she never got a chance to pursue her real dreams of becoming a dancer or finding a perfect romance she was looking for. Despite this situation being tragic though they bring the best out of it and remain friends to this day. This whole situation brings out a lot of questions though, for instance is it wrong to lead someone on like this and does this constitute for legal action? Nev wasted time, money, and resources pursuing a woman who wasn't even real. One could argue her emotions were real but she was posing a completely different person online. This poses the moral issue of do we pursue a companion only for their looks and not their personality. Nev still talks to Angela I believe because of the of her personality and he's in love with the idea of her not the actual her in a sense. The reality behind this whole thing though, that people can pose as a whole family and have you fooled is a scary thought. Just think if someone to naive is caught up in a trap like this the possibility that could go down.

I feel like it's really hard to figure out if someone is being real or not. Now a days a lot of people do that. Lets think about Instagram, people thrive on posting cute, awesome, and etc pictures for likes, as well as videos, and not everything is what it seems. For example, I saw a video on instagram of this girl showing what actually goes on behind the scenes of a make up "tutorial" and everything was so crazy. the girl was honestly a completely different persons, her wig looked like her real hair, her colored contact lenses looked like they were her real eye color, and her skin tone was completely different than what it actually was. I'm not saying I feel sorry for Angela, but I don't see a lot of people reacting badly on the rest of the world who do things for likes. Maybe that was Angela's way, though I don't approve it. It's just nice to see it from a different perspective.
We're humans. We are attracted to what we think looks good to us. So the whole idea of personality versus looks is simple. If you catfish because you aren't comfortable with how you look, and you are willing to lie to me, how can I trust your personality? That takes away from even trying to find out if I like your personality or not. You deceived me and that is not okay. So the real moral issue should be with who is doing the deceiving, not who is being deceived.
I feel that it is wrong to lead someone on by it's pretending to be someone else online! Does it constitute legal action though? That's a good question! I'm not sure if it would require a harsh legal action but I do agree that some form of action should be taken to try to get rid of people who impersonate others online because if such actions were made, it'll reduce the amount of fake profiles that are floating out there.
