The documentary Catfish honestly angered me most out of all the movies we have watched so far. In the beginning, the character, Angela, did not seem so bad. However, as the movie progressed I began feeling less and less sorry for her, especially when I read an article about what she did after the movie was completed and released. Before I get into that, however, let me first give a bit of background info.
It begins with a little girl named, Abby, sending a painting to Nev of a picture that he had recently taken. Soon after the two began corresponding with emails and letters with the supervision of Abby's mother, Angela. This correspondence progresses and soon enough Nev becomes facebook friends with most of Abby's family including her father Vince, brother Alex, and sister Megan. Nev especially becomes enamored with Megan and they begin a romantic relationship online. Megan and Nev communicate with each other frequently sending text messages and calling each other. Megan also sends Nev songs she's supposedly written and sang which Nev checks their authenticity. When Nev finds out that Megan lied about actually writing those songs that's when everything begins falling through. Nev and his friends begin double checking everything that family said to them, and even go to Michigan where Angela and her family lives to investigate the farce further. This was where they find out there is no Megan, there is no prodigy artist, there is no gallery, or horse farm. She even lied about having cancer. Basically, Angela fabricated all these lies and fed them to Nev and his friends because she was not happy with her current life of raising three children-- two of which are mentally handicapped and not fulfilling her dreams. I believe this is the reason why she created all those facebook profiles; they were fragments of the life she wanted and felt she deserved. However, it's not as if she had no control over her life-- she chose to marry Vince, and be the stepmother of those two mentally handicapped children. She wasn't forced into it. After everyone finds out and comes to terms with how Angela ended up catfishing Nev, the movie ends with a few statements to straighten out a few things like how Angela never had cancer and who the people were that Angela stole the pictures from.
The reason I think Angela is a horrible person despite the "happy ending" of the documentary is because after it, she began impersonating Megan again. The article I read said Megan was in a rehab facility and after hearing about what happened emailed Nev wanting to speak to him. They try to schedule a time to speak with each other but that proves difficult, so Nev ends up calling the facility and asking about Megan. They tell him she can't be here because there is no emailing at the rehab center. Nev presents this to Angela and she comes clean saying that she impersonated her daughter again. The fact that Angela was willing to catfish Nev again says a lot about her character. If there was any doubt about her being a pathological liar, it's gone now. Overall, I don't feel sorry for Angela one bit, and think she's a troubled and sick individual. I did not know that Angela had continued her catfishing but this honestly does not sock me. I completely agree with you, this lady is sick! even though she did admit to her lies I feel like she will keep doing it and needs to seek help.
I agree one hundred percent. Angela is a horrible person. She's the one who needs help.
