Callie's notion on White Bear

On Wednesday, my philosophy class and I watched the Black Mirror episode, "White Bear". I honestly have scrambled thoughts about this episode. What I can firmly say is that it didn't sit well with me. While the Black Mirror episode "Be Right Back" was grotesque, for some reason I found this episode to be more disturbing, it was a very interesting episode. My first thought I had regarding this episode was that I don't see this being in our future, whereas I actually saw the "Be Right Back" concept possibly being in the future. My reasoning for this thought is because of the torture situation; This woman savagely watched as her boyfriend murdered a little girl, so as her punishment, she is being brutally tortured in an institution, sort of like a theme park, for the public to watch. She obviously needed to be punished, but to do it in such a public way was messed up to me. My original thought was this: the people who go to watch this, are just as sick as she is when was witnessing the little girl burn. I do understand the reasoning behind these people punishing her in this way. I just know, I would personally never attend this sort of theme park. So let's entertain the idea of this concept happening in the future- say this particular incident was happening in real life, I am sure the parents of the little girl who was brutally murdered, agreed with the idea. They were getting the best justice they could for their little girl's death. This seemed to be a popular place in a sense, it seemed lots of people were interested and enjoying the "tour"; my point being, this was a well-known situation, therefore, our world, while being great, is corrupt. There will be murders and messed up people always. So my question, wouldn't the parents of other murdered children want the same situation for the murderer of their child? I feel as though parents would demand they get justice the same way- therefore, if their wish was granted, and the world was very corrupt, our land would turn into a place of torture theme parks for all those who break the law in a severe way. In a way, this could be a way to prevent and lessen murders and crime- but imagine living in a world with these kinds of "theme" parks surrounding where you dwell. What are your thoughts on this? Did you like this episode better than the last?

My thought on there being parks like the white bear episode wouldn't surprise me but I personally would attend one just one just to see how it was like for the criminal I feel like one day someone gets out of control and try to kill the criminal but I doubt the parks would stop but after attending one of the parks I feel like it might give me a different viewpoint at life

I agree that the people who watch and take part in the White Bear are just as sick and twisted as them person who originally commits the crime. I don't understand why people would want to watch someone else's pain and suffering. It also doesn't make sense to me why some people feel that doing it multiple times is justice when she originally only did it once.

I also thought about the people who were spectating and partaking in her punishment. It's all so ironic! How do you punish someone for a crime by doing the same thing to them that the they did to their victim?? Does that not make you like the very person you are punishing? Aren't you, ultimately, committing the same crime? Which brings up the question, since they were treating her like she treated the little girl...Where is their punishment? How would they feel if someone was doing to them what they were doing to Victoria? Like the whole thing is very hypocritical in a sense.

In hindsight attending this park would be wrong, but think about all the violence and wrongness we view everyday unconsciously. Fights, car crash videos. Even lynchings and stoning were considered a public spectacle at one time and American people would pay to see them.
