Is it Possible To See Everybody's True Form???

Ngan Nguyen

Catfish is a very eye-catching movie because the audience seems to be very interested in the developing relationship between the two potential lovers. However, viewers often and including myself would put guilt onto Angela Wesselman for the fact that she deceived Nev Schulman. We tend to put more guilt on Angela because we were in Nev's position and through his systematic exposure of Angela, we have more sympathy toward Nev than Angela. Well, Nev's point of view connects to White Bear because in the White Bear, the criminal's perspective is more exposed and thus we sympathize Victoria even though she is at fault. Segue from this topic, let's talk about the allegory of Socrates about the three cave men. So one man, who is free, represents a true philosopher who discovers the light and the reality of the light when both of his friends still believe that the shadows are real forms. When the free man returns from his discovery, his friends are ignorant to listen and refuse to be free from chains. Their ignorance is what kept them hidden from the true form of nature. Similarly, Nev who believes that Megan is a beautiful girl and a talented singer, but when finding Megan is not Megan, he is surprised. For this reason, had Nev found the true form of Megan, then whether her appearance is unattractive and hideous, he would still have loved Megan's true form because that is the only thing about Megan in which she is a being in herself. But Nev did not find Megan's true form and he only adores her for the fact she is pretty on the outside. A love relationship involves in both partners facing hardships, knowing each other well, and learning how to accept each other's weaknesses. But Nev and Megan only chat online, therefore it is inconclusive that they are in love. The scene where they talk about sexual topic is disgusting because they have not even met each other once.  Meanwhile, White Bear, with the same person, Victoria, we can see two forms. The previous form which she commits the murder, and the new form which she does not recognize any of her actions. Viewers are more sympathized Victoria's new form because we believe that the new form of Victoria is innocent. But in Catfish, Nev and Megan who are not in their true form when communicating with each other, we should blame them for they are ignorant of each other true form and they are only desiring to catch a big fish. In conclusion, they are the locked cave men who only look at the shadows rather than the light which is there for them.

Its true the the main thing and only thing Angela lied about was her appearance, but i believe there was more than just her appearance from why Nev didn't not feel the same way that she did towards Megan.

I never noticed the parallel between Catfish and White Bear. Honestly, the point of view does control the emotions of the viewer, and I have started to second guess who my sympathy would fall with if either of the two movies had been made from a different point of view.
