The Clone

Robot or Human?

At the beginning of this short film I noticed right away that the technology is very advanced. The scary part about it is that our technology is not very far away from where they are in the film. It is a little scary to think about the accuracy of the technology in the film. Will our society have things similar or different? This film reminded me of Back to the Future because of how advanced they went with the technology. I would hope that our society today would not use technology like Martha does in the film. At first her only intention is to use the messaging system for one purpose: to tell Ash that she is pregnant. Once she got a taste of what it was like to talk to him again she couldn't stop. She becomes set on having him back and being able to communicate with him again. I don't think she realized what it would turn in to when she activated his clone. She just wanted to have Ash back, but instead she got a robot-like clone of him that was deep in the uncanny valley. She realized fairly quick what she had gotten herself into and tried to make it better by telling him what to do and how to act towards things like the real Ash would have. After the failed attempt to make the clone jump off of the cliff she decided to make do with the situation she put herself in and hide him in the attic for the rest of the film.

In my opinion this film displays an unhealthy way of grieving over a death of a loved one. Technology can be used as a very helpful tool, but it can also do more damage than good, and I think that is the case for Martha in "Be Right Back". She was alone during the whole situation so there was no one to tell her to stop. One thing about technology is that it can be addicting, this is easy to see in the world we live in today with social media. Martha made the wrong decision of trying it out, and in turn she made it worse for herself mentally and physically. It was a very unhealthy way of coping with a death and she made it worse by keeping it going after she had her daughter. In the future, when technology goes this far there should be smarter regulations put in place so things like this cannot happen.

Even though back to the future and Be Right Back have nothing to do with each other, I like that you tied in these two movies and the technological advances in both of these movies. The way that the technology in both films is different, is that the technology and Be Right Back is more of a communication between Martha and it was all about her choice. Also interesting that Ash 2 was able to put himself in a position of danger, not just follow his commands. I agree this is whole situation was a way of coping and that there is an addictive aspect we have to think about when it come to technology and the regulations you mentioned.

I totally agree with that the technology shown in the film could very well be used in the future. You make the points about other movies foreshadowing technology and this statement can be shown in our world today. Just like Star Trek, we now have things, like cell phones, that we can communicate with. There is also the point about no being able to grieve properly with these robots. I completely agree with this statement as well. Grieving has to be done in order to move on with one's life and the way these robots mimic deceased people will prevent that process entirely. There needs to be a line drawn on how much technology we want involved in our lives and if this becomes real, it could be very dangerous.

I definitely agree with you. I don't think the technology in itself was bad, Martha just used it in an unhealthy way. She became obsessed with it, which caused it to take over her life. Technology in this age is insanely useful and does things that were unimaginable 20 years ago. But as we advance, we definitely need some regulations to help decide what will become of our world.
