More Fish in the Sea

I always watch the TV series Catfish, but after seeing the movie, I feel like I have gained a real understanding of what a “catfish” actually is.  In the movie, Angela’s husband describes a catfish to be someone that keeps you on your toes, and I think that it is a very accurate definition of it.  My feelings towards the people I have seen on the Catfish the TV show have changed a lot.  At first, I used to think of the Catfish on TV to be heartless people who just like to play mind games with people on the internet.  Some of them do have that intention; however, there are some people on the internet that are actually looking for an escape from life. Before watching the movie, I said to myself that I am not going to feel sorry for whoever was about to be caught by Nev because they deserved to be caught for lying.  Now, I honestly feel sorry for Angela.  This is not to say that she should have lied to Nev about who she was, I am just saying I share much more sympathy for her after learning her life story.  She lives a life of taking care of two handicapped adults, one small child, and a husband.  Nev was her great escape from that life.  In a way, she was putting herself ahead of other people; however, in this instance it was not the way to go because she lied to another person about who she was and used fifteen fake profiles to do it.

We could argue that Angela was exactly who she said she was except for her name and her actual appearance, but I am going to argue against that.  The first things that people use to recognize a person is their name and what they look like, and she lied about both of those things.  All of the thoughts, dreams, and emotions that she shared with Nev were very real; however, because she lied about her name and her appearance, she really is not who she said she was.  She defined those fifteen profiles to be fragments of her, who she could have been, who she wanted to be, and who she actually is. I do not think that pieces of you are what make YOU. I think that once all the elements I have discussed come together, that is what makes you who you are.
