How far can we regress as we make progress?

Well this short film points out several characteristics of society today.  It shows how much people have been absorbed into the torture of others, and also talks about how people have become absorbed into their phones.  Some portion of the society today has been desensitized to the awful ways humans can hurt other humans.  In the movie we find out at the end that the people watching and recording on their phones have been doing this for fun.  The reason they are having fun is because the place is essentially a torture park where they make this woman experience what she did to a child.  There could also be more parks like this or she is one of many people they have done this to, we do not know, but I feel like the possibility is more likely than not for there to be others.  My first thought after talking about this is, why do people enjoy this? But then the thought occurred to me that they could be desensitized, but they could also have a warped justice system.  There could have been someone that preached that something like that would be a good idea, and people blindly followed.  However, one way or another people have been very desensitized to things like gore, torture (psychological or physical), abuse of human rights, and what justice is through the entertainment industry.  I retract the comments I made in class stating that I believe doing this once would be just.  I say this because I realize society has become far too focused on revenge as justice.  In the entertainment industry, movies being an example, there have been many plot lines that fit the mold of, “something bad happens to protagonist so he or she has to go and kill whoever has wronged him or her.”  This mindset has fallen onto the public, and I feel it may especially affect children whom are very impressionable.  However, I cannot gauge how much it has affected children, but I can talk about aspect of culture in the U.S. today.  There are a plethora of videos on Youtube that have the title, “PERSON STOLE ______ NOW WE GET REVENGE” or “WE GET REVENGE ON ******* NEIGHBOR.”  With how much videos like this have amassed, it shows how obsessed with revenge our culture has become.  So with this fondness and desensitization of cruelty towards other humans, what are the chances of something like this actually happening? Could we actually become blinded enough to where we start further rejecting human rights in an age where we are also obsessed with our personal freedoms?
