Thoughts on Memphis Healthy Habits

From the get go, I was impressed with the idea to blog about how to help get an entire city healthy. I've seen stuff on smaller scales (for example: the November project is a group of casual runners who work together to be motivated in some new England city). Having resources all in one place saves time to keep people from searching- time they could be using to become healthier. While there were some shortcomings, nothing major seemed lacking, and all the issues could be hammered out soon after the launch of the site.
My favorite part about the site was its blog format. The fact that someone would be on staff to gather information added a human touch. It also opened the window for things like question and answers and even things like update blogs from citizens of Memphis who have adapted their lifestyle from this blog style. While the site definitely does serve as an aggregate type deal, it can be regularly expanded on and be relatable to more people!
The fact that obesity is an epidemic and needs to be tackled (almost literally) showed in this cycle of presentations. This project approached the issue in a much different manner than my groups. It shows that obesity is clearly something many people find to be an issue, yet it can be tackled from multiple angles. Weight is not something that you can wish away, it requires effort to change. Memphis Healthy Habits shows people how to take care of their diets and bodies. Showing people clubs that are active in our community is awesome! My only tweak on it would be to possibly keep updates on what free events are going on in the city, whether they be classes or activities going on in local parks.
All in all, the idea of keeping information to help improve the bodies of Memphians all in one place is a great idea. We top too many lists of bad things, and obesity should be one of the first to go.
