On December 2nd, the group that presented proposed the idea "Calnter." They said this would be an efficient way to count calories and to raise awareness for healthy eating. Having this fingerprint scanner at fast food restaurants would turn red if you exceeded the 2000 calorie/week limit. It was proposed that incentives would be given to those who stayed below the calorie intake limit. The government may have to force these restaurants to put these out.
While this was a good idea to raise awareness, I questioned if it would even be possible. If fast food restaurants would have to have these, they could potentially hurt their business. They are a business, hence they are in it to make money. If they cared about their customers' health, wouldn't they simply make the food healthier rather than help them count calories?
When the movie "Supersize Me" came out, millions watched it. Even with this much awareness on McDonald's and other fast food restaurants, there was little to no decline in the food sales. To me, this simply says that Americans care more about convenience and low prices rather than personal health. Personally, I am well aware of how unhealthy fast food is for you, yet I still gladly spend the money, as I cannot afford to go to a sit down restaurant every day. This is the case for many Americans, as so many are living below the poverty line and cannot afford healthy groceries.
Another worry I have about this proposal is the financial aspect of it. Who will pay for the database, for these finger scanners, and other items that go into the system. Since the restaurants and sponsors such as Weight Watchers certainly will not pay for it, as it would hurt their personal business, who will? Perhaps the government or healthy eating organizations will fund it, I am not sure how it will successfully and logically be able to happen.
One suggestion on how to make the Calnter better is the database. Instead of just showing the amount of calories, it should look as a nutrition facts label. That way, you can see the daily percentage of sodium, fat, carbohydrates, etc. that you are eating each day. That way, if you are eating a high calorie salad from a drive thru, it will show you what healthy calories you are eating versus the unhealthy calories. This will make the project much better, as it will raise awareness for different kinds of calories in fast food that are hurting your body.
